More than 10,000 years of history are told to Carnac, this essential megalithic site in the department of Morbihan, whose relics, between menhirs and dolmens, from Cairn de Kercado to the tumulus Saint-Michel, from Quiberon Bay to the succulent Breton galettes. Carnac is a vast commune of Morbihan situated along a shoreline torn on the Atlantic coast between the Gulf of Morbihan and the Quiberon peninsula and between Lorient and Vannes. The permanent population is only 4,260 inhabitants, but it grows at the pace of summer seasons and tourist attractions, including megalithic alignments, which would have been erected between 4,000 and 2,000 years before J-C in Neolithic. Coming to Carnac, one always wonders how the prehistoric man was able to build these countless menhirs and dolmens, some of which exceed 4 meters high.

The large beach of Carnac

Carnac is not only known for its prehistoric sites and remains. It is also a famous seaside town in the Morbihan, which attracts its wealthy estivants since the beginning of the 20th century. Indeed, the seaside town was created in 1903 on the ancient salt marshes of Breno, and quickly took its rise. Carnac becomes bicephalus, split between Carnac-plage and Carnac-ville.

Around the Grande Plage de Carnac, which stretches along the bay of Quiberon, you will find many hotels where to sleep in Carnac, between the Boulevard de la Plage and the Avenue des Druides. A walk from the Pointe Churchill at the marina – Port in Dro – is worth a shot. Many restaurants and bars – we are in Brittany! – border the beach area, towards the Allée du Parc and Miln Avenue. The port district is an ideal area where to sleep close to the beach and also if you want to go to sea to fish or enjoy a ride on the pier during the beautiful days. Following the pier to the west, a long hike allows you to reach Pointe du Pô.

Carnac center

The city centre of Carnac is a bit the old town, dating before the development of the seaside city. It organizes around the Saint-Cornély church – built between the 17th and 18th centuries -, classified as historical monuments since 1960. It is dedicated to Saint-Cornély, protector of horn animals. We can choose to stay in Carnac-centre for several reasons: either the beach hotels are all taken on board, or we are looking for a place to stay quiet, away from the crowded beaches of the coast of South Brittany.

Again, a large number of bars and restaurants await you. Don't miss visiting the Musée de Préhistoire de Carnac and the site of the megalithes, directly accessible from the city centre. Going to Breno, take a walk to see the Chapel of Saint-Colomban (16th century) to the Pointe du Gourec. To the north, the Saint-Michel tumulus, then the Alignments of Carnac , those of the Ménec and the Maison des Mégalithes are impressive to see.
