History of the Mirador de Colomb
It was in the early 19th century that the idea of paying tribute to Christopher Columbus emerged. Indeed, the Dutch browser chooses the port of Barcelona to land on its return from America. Originally, the idea of the city is to erect a statue of Christopher Columbus on the Duc Medinaceli square in the Gothic Quarter. The place finally returns to Admiral Galceran Marquet. We have to wait 1881 for a promoter, fascinated by the discovery of America, to put the project on the front of the stage. He managed to carry out the project by convincing one of the secretaries of the universal exhibition of 1888. The city adopted the project on 6 September 1881 and entrusted the creation of the statue to Rafael Atché.
The work to be done is enormous and requires several reinforcements (funds, columns etc.). In a city of Barcelona in the midst of a boom, the construction site attracts the crowd who come to watch the carriage of the various pieces of the monument. However, the construction of the statue creates controversy. Its funding must initially be made up of special donations. Problem, the amount collected is not enough. It is therefore the Municipal Council of Barcelona and the government of Madrid (which will provide bronze from war waste) that fill the gaps. That's very deplorable to Barcelonnais.
The statue was finally inaugurated during the 1888 universal exhibition. During the twentieth century, the statue undergoes several renovations (in 1929, 1965, 1976 and 1984) to give the statue as we know it today.
