Marsaxlokk and its postcard decor
There is only one place where old fishermen always catch fish in their nets, under a bright sun all year round, and where the fishes luzzi (boats) float on turquoise water by animating the decor of their bright colours: Marsaxlokk is the largest fishing port in Malta and its Sunday fish market is the best time to visit this lovely village.

Located in the southeast of the island of Malta, this old village whose name means “the bay of syrocco” for the winds coming from the north of Africa, is the place to go if you like to find the atmosphere of the past, when everything was simpler. The Phoenicians arrived via the port of Marsaxlokk when they settled in Malta in the 8th century BC. It is also here that the Ottoman army landed to lead the Grand Headquarters of Malta in 1565.
Marsaxlokk hasn’t changed much since, and it’s much better like that.

Fishing is the old commercial activity of Marsaxlokk. Colored boats called luzzi (luzzu au singular) are traditional Maltese boats. They have small painted eyes (Phoenician eyes) on their prowes, supposed to protect them and bring luck to fishermen.

As you may doubt, it is an ideal place to go eat a dish of fish or seafood in one of the restaurants on one of the places in front of the sea. The dishes cooked here are delicious, the best in Malta without hesitation.

Most tourists come for Sunday market , where you can buy fresh fish as well as honey, jam, wine and clothing. During the week, visitors buses flock to Marsaxlokk mainly to enjoy a long meal on the coast. The frame is really enchanting, we feel like we are on a postcard.
Don’t hesitate to stay a little later in the evening, and the little village will be all yours! This village reminds us of the old times, and this feeling is not ready to fade away.
