As shown by many films, Mont Rushmore is a secret piece!
Probably one of the most emblematic monuments of United States , Mont Rushmore apparently did not finish delivering all his secrets. If we already knew that this giant granite sculpture represented the features of the faces of four of the American presidents – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln –, recent revelations mention the existence of a hidden room behind the work of art located in South Dakota.
An unfinished work
"Gutzon Borglum". This name certainly does not tell you much, but it is the name of the one who, in 1927, commanded the team responsible for the construction of Mount Rushmore. As he began the construction of the work of his life, the American sculptor set out to create a much larger monument at that time, bringing together some of the important moments of American history.
Only, after having realized the four faces of the most striking presidents of American history, the administration in place did not allow him to continue his gigantic project. Several years later, he was allowed to begin construction of the secret room called “Hall of Records”.
Unfortunately, Gutzon died without having the opportunity to complete his sanctuary. The secret room remained unfinished for tens of years, until in the 1990s, the Bush Administration (father) decided to have unknown artists complete, the construction of the secret room and its development.
The contents of the secret room
The Archives Hall, whose access is strictly forbidden to tourists, both American and international, would contain enamel and porcelain panels, on which are laid some important elements and fragments of American history.
Notably the declaration of independence of the United States, the Constitution of the country and the Declaration of Rights, as well as the biography of the sculptor. The latter would be hidden in a wooden safe.
A must-see monument for tourists
If you happen to be in the US, don’t hesitate to visit Mount Rushmore, which in addition to the historical aspect, has also been the scenery of several American films since then. This is indeed a must-see monument for tourists, fans of the world’s most powerful nation, who are more than 3 million to travel to the heart of the Black Hills of South Dakota.
