The 9 most beautiful hikes to do in the Lot-et-Garonne

A green destination par excellence, it is not the Lot-et-Garonne hikes that lack... hundreds of walks, from one hour to several days of walking, allow you to explore the whole department!

In the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, hiking in Lot-et-Garonne is the guarantee of a good bowl of air and a beautiful green setting. Here, no big cities, but hilly and sun-heated landscapes, forests, vineyards, castles and heritage villages, where we always appreciate the warm welcome made to hikers... Not to mention the south-west cuisine, thanks to which we quickly regain strength!

1. Pujols and the Mail Valley

Unmissable stage in the department, Pujols is among the most beautiful French villages. It would be a shame to hike in Lot-et-Garonne without taking the time to take a tour of this charming medieval village, which will delight heritage lovers.

After the visit, you pass through the hilly landscapes of the Valley of the Mail: the path climbs and then rediscovers continuously, without great difficulty, but what to accumulate a little positive denial. Several beautiful views are on the way.

As long as you’re in the corner, don’t hesitate to cross the Lot, direction Villeneuve, turn the historic centre to the foot of the iconic Tour de Paris.

A hike from Lot-et-Garonne that combines heritage and oenology! Duras is indeed known for its terroir and its wines, and the route of this walk leads you straight to the Maison des Vins de Duras, for a possible tasting.

Rando easy and family, you walk in the vicinity of Duras, following country roads lined with hedges. At the start or at the finish, take the time to visit the Duras Castle, a beautiful 12th century building and a symbol of the city.

3. Casteljaloux and Lake Clarens

A quiet little village, Casteljaloux is located on the edge of the Landes de Gascogne: on the occasion of this hike in Lot-et-Garonne the changes in the landscape, where the crops leave room for the pine forest.

The route begins on the central square of Casteljaloux and takes place partly in the shade of trees, perfect for walking in the beautiful days: the stage at Lake Clarens (paying in the summer) then takes all its meaning to cool down in the water!

4. The vineyards of Buzet

A pleasant hike in Lot-et-Garonne to discover the wine region of Buzet, the AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) the most famous in the department. At the start of the small village of Saint-Pierre de Buzet, follow the paths that cross the well-lined vineyards, through a rich terroir in which the wine of Buzet draws all its character.

The plots, well exposed to the sun, do not have a big gap... the walk then leads you through the Landes de Gascogne forest to close the loop.

5. Ambrus Forest

Ambrus is a venerable and small village, whose existence is very ancient. On site, the visit of the castle of Ambrus, its 12th century church, and a passage forced by its miraculous fountain! Do we ever know?

It is one of the popular walks of Agen residents to take the air and walk a few kilometers. A small hike in Lot-et-Garonne that runs along the Lateral Canal to the Garonne (long the Canal du Midi) by taking GR652, a well-designed and largely shaded route that allows you to get out of the city while observing its activity.

Passing to Agen, enjoy this hike with the visit of the historic centre of the Lot-et-Garonne capital, for a full day.

7. The Beauville loop

This beautiful bastide, established in height on its grove, is one of the hiking tours in Lot-et-Garonne not to be missed in the surroundings of Agen. Start walking directly from the centre of Beauville, along its narrow alleys and along the old round road.

Then the path leads you out of the village: cross the valley to the church of Marcoux, for the point of view, then close the loop through fields to reach Beauville.

8. The Campet Forest

Return to the west of the department for a hike in Lot-et-Garonne in the shade of pines and oaks: the forest of Campet is the ideal place to walk and subtract from the sun at the same time.

The main buckle, marked in yellow, follows a flat land on a sandy soil, crosses two repises and runs along the small Avance River, and leaves the freedom for a few variants.

9. The Bastide of Aiguillon

Due to its strategic position at the confluence of Lot and Garonne, Aiguillon has long been a fortified place: it remains today as one of the most beautiful bastides of Gascogne.
