In which quarter house in Syracuse?

Are you passing through the maritime and historical city of Syracuse in Sicily? Take at least two days to discover all its riches! We help you here to choose where to stay in Syracuse!

A beautiful seaside in the background, a remarkable historical heritage, a poetic and vibrant atmosphere... Syracuse is an essential step! The Sicilian city extends on the Ionian coast, in a natural environment of all beauty. Its monuments are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage site. Past the most modern and industrial districts, one discovers an effect of baroque churches, a duomo to the airs of ancient Greece and Gothic palaces with Catalan accents. The native city of Archimedes seduces by this diversity, which is found above all in the old town concentrated on the island of Ortygia.

A stay of at least one night is necessary to explore history but also art, culture and gastronomy. Syracuse is also an excellent base for visiting the surrounding area. The Baroque cities of Noto, Ragusa and Modica, the Parc de Plemmirio, the reserve Orientata Cavagrande del Cassibile are among the excursions not to be missed!

The city is shared between the island of Ortygie and the modern part that gathers Tyche, Achadine, Epipolis and Neapolis. To help you choose where to stay in Syracuse, we have described for you the best areas to sleep!

Ortygie Island

Ortygia or Ortigia is an island covering the southern half of the city. It is also the old historic centre. The district is ideal for sleeping because it concentrates most of Syracuse’s heritage. The atmosphere is most pleasant, especially at the end of the day, when the Italians come out of work to find themselves on the terrace or in traditional restaurants. The small illuminated streets have a crazy charm and street musicians are driving away the old town. Yet, while staying in Ortygie, you will be quiet and will not pay more than elsewhere. This portion of Syracuse is forbidden to cars. If you are vehiculated, you will have to park nearby, on an authorized place. But once you pass this little constraint, you will be greatly rewarded by the magnificent view of the seaside.

The district includes monuments such as the temple of Apollo, the Castello Maniace, the piazza (place) del Duomo , the Cathedral of Syracuse, the Palace Beneventano or the Palace of Arcivescovile. A picturesque market is held every morning. A little further, the port of Syracuse, with its fishermen and their boats that seem to come out of another time, connects Ortygie to the rest of the city. Ortygie is the place you are most recommended to stay in Syracuse!

An interesting alternative to Ortygie is to sleep near the Neapolis archaeological park. It is even the best area to sleep in Syracuse to dive into the ancient period of the city. Located north of the modern city, it sleeps quietly while being close to the most important remains. From Neapolis, it will be easy to access the altar of Hiéron II, the immense Greek theatre, the Roman amphitheatre dug into the rock, the necropolis, the stone quarries of Latomies. Don’t miss the Denys Eye, 23 meters high! From this neighborhood you will be near the Madonna delle Lacrime Shrine and its impressive architecture, the Paolo Orsi Regional Archaeological Museum and the San Giovanni Catacombs. From Greek origin, they are located under the church of San Giovanni and are worth a visit.

Are you still looking to stay in Syracuse? the other three quarters of the city may interest you, especially if you do not find accommodation in your budget in the previous two areas described. Tyche is close to the archaeological museum Paolo Orsi and the archaeological park of Neapolis. Epipoli, with its fortified walls, plunges you into the atmosphere of the old Syracuse. Achradina is more modern and trendy, ideal for a shopping session.

Located 40 minutes by car from Syracuse, it is accessed by old roads, olive groves and almond trees. On arrival, Noto is sublime. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city was born of a catastrophe: in 1693 an earthquake destroyed it. At the time, it was 10 kilometers further. The city was reconstructed as a baroque theatre, with majestic limestone palaces and dome-shaped churches. From the church of San Francesco all’Immacolata to the Cathedral of San Nicolò, passing through the Palazzo Ducezio, everything is beautiful, even more to the sunset. An absolutely unique place Sicily !
