Arbois
Why not start with the Jura Wine Capital? Arbois, the city of Louis Pasteur is known for its struggle to recognize the quality of the wines of the region. The village is also the birthplace of the first creation of French AOC, born in 1936. The first vinification cooperatives of France in 1906 also come from the wine-growing region of Arbois.
Small town of character of Burgundy Franche-Comté, Site Remarkable du Goût, its many fields offer tastings and visits to cellars. Its Musée de la Vigne et du Vin du Jura, nestled at Château Pécauld , turns out to be an excellent way to start your “wine road of Jura”. Among the places where to make a tasting are the Henri Maire domains, with screening of a film on the work of the vineyard and discovery of the cellars, or the domain Rolet Father and Son, always in Arbois. Both proudly wear the Vignobles & Découvertes label. As a bonus, enjoy it to visit one of the most beautiful stunts of Jura Arbois.
Poligny
We visit the small village of Poligny for its famous cheese County. But that’s not all! On the wine side, the terroir located in and around the city has to delight your taste buds. At the foot of the first foothills of the Jura massif, the wine region of Revermont offers a hilly geography, to wines with a strong personality.
There are many places where to start tasting. The Domaine de Philippe Chatillon proposes to discover the appellations Arbois and Côtes du Jura. It organizes vintage old evenings, days of vine and vintages. Note: its wines are made without any input. The Maison de Rose or the Caveau des Jacobins are some of the other sites in the area that are recommended to you.
The Coteaux de la Haute-Seille
With about forty wine producers and two wine cooperatives, the Coteaux de la Haute-Seille have the particularity of sheltering the capital of the Yellow Wine, the Golden Jura: Château-Chalon. This dry white wine from the local vine Savagnin is as atypical in its manufacture as in its bottle, in a capacity of 62 centilitres. In the surrounding cellars, you can taste the best AOC wines of the Jura, as in the Château d’Arlay.
Renowned as the oldest winery castle in France, he deserves your visit. ♪ Caves Jean Bourdy are also to be discovered. Dating from the 16th century, they are labeled Vignobles & Discoveries, combining gastronomic exploration and heritage.
The Star
The village of Étoile also bears the name of one of the four geographical AOCs of the Jura wines. You wonder why that poetic name? It is said that its origin would come from the form of the five hills surrounding the city, or fossil stars buried in the vineyards. On the vine, the AOC Étoile includes Chardonnay, Savagnin and Poulsard. The vineyard covers 67 hectares.
For a tasting, the Castle of the Star has a 17th century cellar that you can visit. Its vineyards cover 17 hectares. They honour Savagnin, Chardonnay, Poulsard and Trousseau. The Yellow Wine, the Macvin, the Crémant, the Jura Coasts are produced in a sustainable way. The Domaine de Montbourgeau offers thematic evenings in the summer. The owners even thought of children with odor recognition games.
The London Coteaux
Les Coteaux Lédoniens, close to the prefecture of Lons-le-Saunier, are located near the vineyard villages of Montaigu, Conliège, Perrigny, Vernantois, or Chilly-le-Vignoble. They produce tasteful Jura Coasts, to be discovered in an area also rich in historical treasures. In Montaigu, you will be able to visit a 13th century cellar at Domaine Pignier. The winemakers work here the biodynamic wines. It is favored by the micro climate due to the remote, the presence of many bosquets and abundant fauna and flora.
The wine growers respect the winemaking specifications DEMETER (no addition of oenological products or levurage). In Crançot, the Maison du Vigneron offers a wide selection of raws, while the Coteaux du Val de Sorne combine pleasure of senses with exciting walks with an art historian (in summer).
South Revermont
South Revermont first attracts for its majestic retreats. But this jurassian vineyard, close to its neighbor bourguignon, also offers wine villages with southern influence (Saint-Amour being the last town south of the territory). Gevingey, Cesancey, Orbagna, Rotalier or Beaufort are to explore if you are amateur.ice.s of good wines. The vineyard houses carved in the stone are numerous in the region.
To Obagna, The Caborde is a high wine-growing place: wine is tasted, but it is also used for its exhibitions, screenings, concerts and workshops around wine and regional culture. You can also simply drink a glass of the best wines in the surrounding areas or go on a bucolic hike. Before or after your visit to the Caborde, explore the castles of Rosay or Chevreaux, above the backdrop of Gizia. Other outstanding areas await you, such as the Ronces in Orbagna, or Peggy and Jean-Pascal Buronfosse in Rotalier.
The Breakthrough of Yellow Wine
Each year, the Jurassians offer their cellars and barns to welcome 80 winemakers who have come to celebrate The Breakthrough of Yellow Wine . Organised by the Association des Ambassadeurs des Vins Jaunes, this great wine event in France honours the Vignoble du Jura. If you are lucky to visit the region in February, don’t miss this event of magnitude. This is the perfect opportunity to taste the new wines just released from the barrel.
prestige Yellow wines are served in a picturesque atmosphere, with auction sale, gourmet banquets, concerts, competitions and tastings at the blind. Tens of thousands of visitors travel to the village chosen each year to celebrate the precious liquid.
Le Biou
Are you in the area in September? Go to Arbois to celebrate the Biou! This traditional ceremony gathers faithful and curious to admire the giant cluster (between 80 and 100 kilos!), consisting of the best red and white vines chosen by the wine growers.
This is an ancestral ritual that the winemakers practice on the first Sunday of September, near the harvest. It is certainly not an event of the same magnitude as the Yellow Wine Break, but the Biou is worth the detour, only for its folklore and festive atmosphere.
