History of the Cité de l’Espace in Toulouse

The Cité de l’Espace was born from the will of the City of Toulouse to see emerging a place allowing the public to discover the history, achievements and projects of man in space. From 1994 the municipality and its partners entrust Jean-Noël Plachez , former project leader for the City of Science and Industry, the design and format of the museum.

In parallel, it buys the land necessary for its construction. The 28 June 1997 , the City of Space is inaugurated. Since then, many developments have taken place, such as the deployment of a replica of the station Mir nature size in 1998, or the creation of a permanent exhibition room dedicated to the planet Mars in 2002.

His accessibility efforts were rewarded in October 2003, by obtaining the label “Tourism and Handicap”. In 2006, an area dedicated to children was created, while in 2013, the museum acquired a Martian meteorite. In more than 20 years of existence, 5 million visitors trampled the soil of this scientific culture center.
