History of the Cité de l’Espace in Toulouse

The Cité de l’Espace was born from the will of the City of Toulouse to see emerging a place allowing the public to discover the history, achievements and projects of man in space. From 1994 the municipality and its partners entrust Jean-Noël Plachez , former project leader for the City of Science and Industry, the design and format of the museum.
In parallel, it buys the land necessary for its construction. The 28 June 1997 , the City of Space is inaugurated. Since then, many developments have taken place, such as the deployment of a replica of the station Mir nature size in 1998, or the creation of a permanent exhibition room dedicated to the planet Mars in 2002.
His accessibility efforts were rewarded in October 2003, by obtaining the label “Tourism and Handicap”. In 2006, an area dedicated to children was created, while in 2013, the museum acquired a Martian meteorite. In more than 20 years of existence, 5 million visitors trampled the soil of this scientific culture center.
What to see and do at the City of Space
The City of Space offers a remarkable dive towards the infinite. Close to 2500 m2 interactive exhibitions allow you to learn more about space, space flights, weather and our planet. Known for its scientific value, the City is also a playful place accessible tou.te.s.
Interior
Inside, walking in the exhibition halls, adults and children are invited to discover the heavenly mechanics, remote communication, life in space or exploration of the universe. The visit begins with a model of the first Sputnik artificial satellite, the first object sent beyond the atmosphere more than 50 years ago.

The Cité de l’espace de Toulouse follows a precise schedule that should be consulted on the website .
On opening days, the museum welcomes visitors most often from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. . Closing of the boxes takes place 1 hour before the site closes its doors.
