Located in Charente-Maritime (17), off Rochefort, Oleron Island is the second largest island of France metropolitan after the Corse . Between the estuary of the Charente and the estuary of the Gironde, the island of Oleron counts almost 25,000 inhabitants, but the population is multiplied by 10 during the summer period: it is one of the major tourist destinations in France, especially because of its rich biodiversity, its small fishing boats, its strong sunshine – it is called “Olyon the light” – its beautiful beaches What to feel like sometimes in Brittany, the Mediterranean or the Landes. Saint-Denis-d’Oléron

At the northern end of the island is an unmistakable: Chassiron lighthouse , on the homonymous tip. Near the hotels where to sleep in Saint-Denis-d’Oléron, is the beach of the Boirie In the middle of town. For beautiful nature walks, walk to the Chassiron lighthouse, tapped on a rocky cliff.

Saint-Georges d’Oléron

Third city of the island, you will find to stay in Saint-Georges-d’Oléron for the beaches: beach of Chaucre, beach of the good, beach of the Sables Vignier (west coast), beach and forest of the Saumonards and beach of Boyardville. In front of it is the famous Fort Boyard visible from the coast. Walk through the oyster site of Fort Royer and the Moëze-Oléron National Natural Reserve .

Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron

Staying in Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, the capital of the island, shows its small streets and the museum of the island of Oleron in the centre. Several hotels are available in Saint-Pierre d’Oléron. The church, the arrow of the Lantern of the Dead – the highest in France – are to be seen. Behind the dune, enjoy the small villages of La Biroire, La Menounière and La Chefmalière. To swim, direction the beach of the Cotinière and its lighthouse – a friendly place to stroll, from where you will enjoy a drink while admiring the ballet of fishing boats on the harbour – or the beach of the Remigeasse. A walk in the salt marshes will sublimate your stay, between fishing boats and small marinas.

Le-Château-d’Oléron

By visiting the city of Château-d’Oléron, you can contemplate the city citadel , a must-see site built by Richelieu in 1630 on the ruins of the ancient medieval fortress. To feel the popular soul of the city, go to the market halls and its public fountain. Walk to the oyster port, an unmissable place for anyone looking for a pleasant place to sleep on the island of Oleron. The village of Ors and its multi-coloured oyster huts, La Chevalerie, Le Grand Gibou or La Renisière are villages to be seen. To swim or surf, direction the waves of the beach of Vert-Bois.

Saint-Trojan-les-Bains

Saint-Trojan-les-Bains is the seaside town of Oleron Island. To be seen: villas of the late 19th century of Basque, Anglo-Norman or Neo-Gothic inspiration, the church dating from 1661. Along the boulevard de la plage, enjoy the terraces near the hotels where to stay in Saint-Trojan-les-Bains. Large beaches of fine sand, cabanons and pine forests make the charm of this unmissable commune in the south of Oleron Island. To the west, the large beach – naturist – offers large stretches of sand while La Pointe de Gatseau and the homonymous beach guarantee beautiful nature walks along a vast sandy course.
