Visit of the Bohemian neighborhoods of Vilnius on foot

Discover Uzupis and other bohemian districts of Vilnius

We don't know much about Lithuania, but we know the city. Vilnius contains architectural treasures, sensational cultural places. As the capital and largest city in the whole country, Vilnius also offers a wide disparity in its atmospheres thanks to its very heterogeneous areas . There is especially a neighborhood in which tourists and inhabitants like to walk, these are the bohemian quarters .

When we talk about bohemian life and Paris, we immediately think of Montmartre. Vilnius also owns its small Montmartre and despite its 500 000 inhabitants, it is always possible to stroll through the paved streets of Vilnius in one of these neighborhoods so typical.

To discover an atmosphere of time, an almost medieval atmosphere, discover the heart of one of the most famous districts of Vilnius, namely the “Uzupis Republic” . This district, which is managed and administered by an artistic community in Vilnius, is very independent and has its own laws which are thus enshrined in a constitution well apart from the rest of the city. This is bohemian quarter , it is its colorful houses, its galleries of paintings that jalign the streets, its murals that show the vivacity and dynamism of street art but also fantastic street shows.

The Bohemian quarter of the Uzupis Republic has its own style which is easily recognizable, namely cool and creative At once. With its decorated streets, wall paintings and all these sculptures that give life, Uzupis is now an independent republic since April 1, 2000. Just read the very humorous statement in English (such as “Man has the right to die, but it’s not a duty”) and don’t forget that you can stamp your passport with fake security guards.

This spirit shows how much the neighborhood wishes to convey a independent spirit happy, festive and creative. Your visit of Uzupis ends with a return to the old town where you can enjoy a good beer and local specialties in a small Lithuanian brewery.

To know

The price to discover Uzupis district from your hotel in the heart of Vilnius includes a guided tour (in English) of all the bohemian quarters, along this famous street inclined, but also a beer tasting and specialities like smoked fish and accompaniment by an approved professional guide. The visit lasts about 3 hours with a schedule that starts around 4:00 pm to enjoy the maximum urban life of this neighborhood. The group in which you will evolve is up to 12 people. Don’t forget to take comfortable shoes with you, even walking shoes because trapping and walking on these pavers can quickly become tedious and tiring.

For those who would like to dig the question a little more, the district of Uzupis, now one of the major attractions of Vilnius and even all of Lithuania, has a cooperation agreement with the district of Montmartre in Paris... this may explain this, right?

Did you know Vilnius' bohemian quarters?
