Where to sleep around the Pont du Gard?
1. La-Roque-sur-Cèze
Village laid a rocky piton, La-Roque-sur-Cèze is a real small escape from our daily life. Here, time seems to have stopped several centuries ago. Stone houses and streets dating from another era, and conservation is remarkable. By climbing the rue de l’Arceau or the street Rompe-Cul, you can only admire the buildings around us and its old mulberry tree, thinking over the long centuries that they crossed.
The remarkable places of one of the most beautiful villages in the Gard are its 12th century church, its Charles-Martel bridge crossing the Ceze and the Sautadet waterfalls, a sublime natural place where a dozen small waterfalls have been formed over time.
2. Goudargues
Known as the Venice of the Gard, Goudargues is crossed by a small channel from which you can visit the old village. Cité fleurie, Goudargues has many architectural treasures, from its abbatiale to its small paved alleys, through its washing with its bronze frog dating from the medieval era.
The walk in this beautiful village of Gard is pleasant and you like to sit on a terrace in the shade of trees. It is also possible to navigate the canal outside the village for a total change!
3. Aiguezze
At the limit of the Gard and the Ardèche , Aiguèze is a city built on a cliff overlooking the Ardèche River. It is a beautiful medieval village with some ramparts of the round path of the former guards of the places and where the view is splendid.
Some buildings, such as the remains of the dungeon and the sarrasine tower , have a particular shape and recall the fortifications of the village. The places are peaceful and are an excellent drop point for travellers wishing to travel through the gorges of the Ardèche.
4. Lussan
Among the villages of the Gard, Lussan is the one whose form recalls the Middle Ages. Built on a height, the city still enjoys its fortifications today. This curiosity plunges us several centuries back and that is what makes the charm of the places.
A walk in the alleys of the village is a pleasant moment to discover beautiful buildings. Among them, mention the church in the centre and the castle at its end. The latter, former residence of the seigneurs of Lussan, is surmounted by a pretty bell tower in the form of a campanile.
5. Saint-Laurent-d’Aigouze
Capital of the Camarguese race, Saint-Laurent-d’Aigouze is located at the edge of the Camargue Regional Natural Park, on the border with the Hérault . With its arena near the church, the tauromachie is inherent in the village!
Saint-Laurent-d’Aigouze is a charming city, without a splendid building as in other villages, but there is good living and walking there is pleasant. With its large shaded squares, St.Lawrence is an ideal place to take glasses or terraced cafés.
6. Venetobre
Vézénobres is one of the perched villages of the Gard. Built on a hill, the city owes its cultural heritage to medieval times and the majority of homes were built between the 12th and 14th centuries. The village is a privileged walk with its paved and steep streets to discover the architectural gems of the Middle Ages.
Among them are the castles that can only be admired from the outside, the street of Romanesque houses and its magnificent eight-century stone buildings for some or the hotel of Montfaucon. For lovers of figs, the village is a great producer and even owns its Figue house!
7. Barjac
Barjac is a village of the Gard which, if it is more recent than others, seems to have come out of the Middle Ages! It must be said that Barjac has developed in several times. If the fortifications date back to the 14th century, the city took advantage of the Renaissance to see the building of its most famous buildings, such as the Renaissance Tower, close to the old city hotel, and the castle.
It is close to the old town hall that you get the best of the village atmosphere, with its terraces and pretty fountain. Barjac is also the ideal place for a walk in the quiet of stone houses typical of the villages of the region. Don’t miss it!
8. Montclus
Surrounded by vineyards and lavenders, the village of Montclus is certainly one of the most beautiful villages in the Gard. Built in the meanders of the Ceze, the city surprises the visitor with its crazy charm and its emblematic buildings that are the old bridge and the houses that have not taken a wrinkle despite the centuries past.
Some days of the year, this village of barely two-cent souls seems to be extinct, which as if we were alone in this magical place left to abandon. We then have time to admire its narrow alleys and land somewhere to immerse ourselves in the best of the place.
9. Gallargues-le-Montueux
Among the villages of Gard, Gallargues-le-Montueux is distinguished by its location between plain and hill. The places also enjoy a more important animation than elsewhere, since the activity is daily in the village.
Gallargues-le-Montueux is mainly made up of tarry streets with old houses, the majority of which have not been renovated. Typically, it is the ideal place to have a glass on the terrace and walk without having to climb paved streets!
10. Aujargues
Near the beautiful Sommières and Villevieille, Aujargues is a recommended step for lovers of beautiful stones while remaining in a certain modernity. Indeed, in Aujargues, the animations and shops are numerous, and we move there more easily than in the perched villages of the department.
The arch of the town hall crossing the road is the emblematic place of Aujargues. It's impossible to miss him! A natural site classified in the 1960s, the Château d’Aujargues is also an obligatory passage where its two towers impose it. The village is therefore a beautiful discovery that is easily and quickly visited.
11. Junas
Just two kilometers after Aujargues, Junas looks a lot like his neighbor. The alleys are narrow but tarnished, the houses are not medieval but many have not been the subject of recent renovations. We discover a beautiful village of Gard with a soul and animation.
But the emblematic place of Junas is the so-called Bon Temps careers. Dating directly from the medieval era, they are now disaffected and host many shows in the summer. The rest of the year is a unique visit to the department.
Now you know which villages of the Gard you must not miss!
