In Naples, visit an unusual museum by taking the metro
Over the past decade, the city of Naples , in Italy, has transformed several parts of its metro system into full art galleries using contemporary artists to make public transport of the agglomeration a more attractive place for its users. Under the direction of Achille Bonito Oliva , former director of the Venice Biennale, a total of 14 stations (in 2014) spread along lines 1 and 6 of the metro network, were decorated with more than 200 works by more than 100 artists and architects such as Alessandro Mendini, Anish Kapoor, Gae Aulenti, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Karim Rashid, and Sol LeWitt.
Perhaps the most beautiful of them, the metro station Toledo , opened in September 2012, was designed by the Spanish firm of architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca. Created around the theme of water and light, it features two mosaics by South African artist William Kentridge, as well as works by Francesco Clemente, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Shirin Nehsat and Oliviero Toscani.
1,30€ : this is the price of a metro trip to Naples, a contemporary art exhibition included! The Art Stations are home to 200 works and are part of a vast plan for urban planning and public transport in Naples. About 15 stations were designed by the world's largest architects, designers and artists. Why bother in the monster traffic jams of Naples when you can take the subway and admire such works (almost) for free? Pavements, walls, up to the stairs leading to the exit, everything must help to make travellers experience sensory and aesthetic.
