History of Sant’Elmo Castle

Located on the hill of Vomero, Sant’Elmo Castle in Naples is today a medieval castle and a museum. Built under Robert d’Anjou (1329), this ancient medieval palace, called Belforte or Castel Sant’Erasmo, was a fortified royal residence designed by Timo di Camaino . But an earthquake caused the collapse of a part of the castle. When the Spanish decided to rebuild it, they made it a defensive castle.

The military architect Pedro Luis Escrivà di Valenza has the task of building a very impregnable: It is on the hill of Vomero that the Castle Sant’Elmo will be built, allowing to monitor the entire Gulf of Naples, the city and its surroundings. The fort is then called San Telmo, named after a healthy Dominican Spanish. He then became a prison from the 17th to the 19th century until 1952.

Today, Sant’Elmo Castle in Naples is a state-of-the-art cultural property that after restoration was opened to the visit. Remarkable and emblematic of Neapolitan history and culture, it welcomes exhibitions and cultural events by moment.

If you are going to visit the Sant’Elmo Castle in Naples, you will reach the building by crossing a levis bridge and a herse that leads to the place of arms.

The interior of the Château is not accessible to the visit, but the site now houses a multicultural centre that regularly organizes temporary exhibitions, concerts and shows. The Napoli Novecento Museum occupies a few rooms in the Château where you can admire the paintings and sculptures of Neapolitan artists representative of the 20th century.

But the Château Sant’Elmo in Naples is also an exceptional view, which offers an incredible panorama of the city, its bay and the Vesuvius, but also the historic centre, the spaccanapoli spider, the monumental district, the Chiaia district, the lungomare, the island of Capri in the distance, Mergellina, the hill of the Pausilippe or on the quarries of tuf.

The Castle Fort will impress you by the height of its vertical walls. You can access the top terrace by an elevator or by the ramp on the left side by entering. Access by the ramps allows you to discover the levis bridge and the entrance hers, as well as the view through the murderers, especially on the San Martino chartreuse.

How to go to Sant’Elmo Castle?

The hill of Vomero, where the Sant’Elmo Castle is located, but also the San Martino charter, enjoys 3 funiculars.

  • By metro:

You can access it from the Montesanto metro station (verspiazza Dante). This line serves as close as San Martino and Sant’Elmo. On leaving Morghen station, turn right by a small semi-private street.

  • Funicular:

You can also take the central , leaving via Toledo, in the monumental district, or Chiaia funicular , which departs from the neighborhood of the same name, near Piazza Amedeo served by line 2 of the metro. These funiculars, more or less ancient, are above all a charming way to get to the site, but also fast. Ascension takes place in a few minutes while the bus or metro ride can be longer.

  • By bus:

By bus, taking the line V1 , you have several stops near Sant’Elmo Castle (San Martino-certosa and Sant’Elmo, for example)

  • By car:

If you came to Naples with your own car or opted for the car rental When you arrive at the airport, you can park nearby Sant’Elmo Castle and continue on foot.
