This building is like a symbol

The site is located in a neighbourhood surrounded by small brick houses and green spaces. This is barrio was difficult to build because of steep slopes. The organization of this neighborhood was very uniform, without a visible hierarchy element, which is why the library intended to become a landscape building, and an icon.

Located on a hill above Medellín, the library is also accessible with the Metrocable . The project is visible from a large part of the city as a symbol of the new Medellín. This develops a sense of belonging to the inhabitants. This is one of the most visited sites in the city and region. It is one of the five new libraries built as part of the reconstruction efforts of Medellín.

The project is located on the slopes of the Santo Domingo district, one of the most affected by violence in the 1980s. It was at the time the hub of the narcotrafic that served the city of Medellín, the capital of the department of Antioquia in Colombia ... Biblioteca Espana Medellin

Justification of the urban integration of the project

This site, on the edge of the hill overlooking the valley, is composed of a complex network of trails, due to the slope topography, and marked with places and places of encounter. The project is organized in two structures:

The first with the landscaped buildings (rochers) and the second with a platform that integrates the terrace with a view over the valley. This building is therefore designed as a meeting place, multiplying the meeting spaces and thus acting as a reference place. Biblioteca Espana Medellin

Environment and atmosphere

In addition to building a symbolic building recognizable from the valley, the other goal was to develop an interior that would discontextualize the user of his relationship with the immediate environment of poverty. The setting up of a warm atmosphere based on the entrance of daylight allows an environment conducive to study and reading. Biblioteca Espana Medellin
