Ephemeral dive at Grüner See Lake, Austria, where divers can only go there in June and July!
Grüner See , literally "green lake", is a lake located in the Land of Styria, Austria , near the city Tragöß , and at the foot of the snowy mountains of the Hochschwab. In winter, the lake is only 1 or 2 metres deep and its surroundings serve as a natural park. It is a site particularly appreciated by hikers. But when the temperature begins to rise in the spring, the ice and snow on the tops of the mountains begin to melt and the water flows into the basin just below. This one then gorges with water and floods the surroundings, including the park. During the summer , the lake reaches its maximum depth approximately 12 metres and they say that this is the time when it is the most beautiful to see... but also to discover in scuba diving.
The lake owes its characteristic green color (as well as its name) to grass and foliage at the bottom of the water, and thanks to the melting of fresh snow, the ice water is clear. The temperature of the lake is rather cold, 4-8°C but this place is very popular among divers which can observe green meadows at the edge and bottom of the lake, in particular June , when the water is at its highest level. Alpine vegetation and grassland flowers are visible in full bloom under water (!) You can even see benches, bridges and footpaths.
As of July, the water level of the lake began to decrease. In the approach of winter, the lake finds its original size and the park becomes a great place for hikers.
