Why is English essential to travel?

English is very useful abroad

English is the third most spoken language in the world if the only mother tongue is taken into account. However, it is by far the language the most influential and is understood to varying degrees by a large part of the world population.

Travel In order to understand and be understood, a certain level of English must be practiced. I have experienced it myself Australia and I sincerely think that all travelers, simple tourists or backpackers, should speak a minimum of English. When traveling to different countries, English is often the most common language. This means that you can meet people from five different countries at the same time and that the only common language between these five people is English.

English makes it possible to get in touch with many people of different nationalities and cultures, more than other languages. English is also a common language in global tourism. If you want visit different historical places or going to a hotel in the Caribbean or elsewhere, English is usually what the majority of staff can speak in addition to the local or maternal language.

To find a job

When I arrived in Australia, I was really not speaking English, and I had to do manual jobs like many others backpackers Working Holiday Visa in Australia. I looked like an idiot sometimes when the farmer (I was picking fruit and vegetables) asked me to look for a special tool in the bottom of the hangar, in the left shelf, size 12... in short.

For my second visa in Australia, finally comfortable with English, I was at ease Melbourne and I found work in the city center in a restaurant. Of course, it was not a gold job, but I was working in the kitchen and I needed to speak English.

In Australia, it’s blatant, the French often only remain among them and it causes two discomforts:

– they do not practice their English and thus do not improve it. – they agacent other people who do not understand anything in French

I was able to check it wherever I traveled, if you don’t speak English in the room where people of different nationalities are, the latter leave the room after a few minutes.

Do not speak English may not be a problem for you but may cause many animal situations that you would have preferred to avoid:

– to be directed to an airport, a train station – take an order, book on the internet, etc... – do not stay on the touch during a discussion or when someone tells a joke – watching movies, understanding security rules, attending guided tours...

In Asia, Eastern Europe, or in most foreign countries, you will only find very few annotations in French about monuments, or in museums, for the description of what you have before you. Knowing a minimum of English allows you to understand what you are visiting.

In the same way, in speaking English you access a wider choice of books, movies, etc... and this good before everyone. For information, English websites represent 55% of websites worldwide . So you could read interesting things that may not exist in French.

For my part, the simple fact of being left alone abroad gave me the chance to learn English. Each of these solutions does not apply to everyone. A language stay can trust you if you are afraid to leave the unknown. The English classes before leaving give you enough baggage to not seem ridiculous once on site, in the middle of Anglophones.
