History of the Royal Palace of Madrid

The construction of the Royal Palace of Madrid began in 1738, at the request of Philippe V after the fire that destroyed the Alcázar of Habsburg , letting appear the largest royal palace in Europe, but also one of the largest in the world, with 135,000 m2 of surface! It is important to know that the architecture of the Palace was inspired by that of the Louvre.

The Palace was the place of residence of the monarchs of Spain, Charles III in Alphonse XIII. Today transformed into a museum retracing the history of the country, the Royal Palace of Madrid no longer has this function of royal residence, but still hosts some official public or political receptions.

How to go to the Royal Palace of Madrid?

There are several ways to get to the Royal Palace of Madrid, located Calle de Bailén, s/n, 28071 Madrid, Spain.

The entrance to the Palace and access to the visitors are located on the Almudena esplanade, on the corner of Bailén Street.

  • By bus: lines 3, 25, 39 and 148
  • By metro: Lines 5 and 2, Opera station
  • By train: Stop at Príncipe Pío Station

HORARI

If you want to visit the Royal Palace of Madrid and the Gardens of Campo del Moro, know that they are open daily between October and March of 10:00 to 6:00 and 10:00 to 8:00 the rest of the year.

holidays , the palace closes at 3pm or 5pm depending on the day. Closing days: 3 April, 8 April, 11 April, 23 April, 24 April, 1 May and 25 December.

  • Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, you can attend the the Royal Guard in front of the Royal Palace, around noon. Every first Wednesday of the month, a special rotation takes place: the majestic Relève Solennelle de la Garde.
  • If you want to visit the Royal Palace of Madrid without too many tourists, prefer the morning or end of day
