Mahon is the largest city on the island, its capital, but also one of the prettiest. Located in the east of the island, it is the ideal starting point to start your road trip to Minorca, as this is where you will land by plane.

Mahon is a cultural city, which offers many museums to discover, and beautiful historical buildings to observe. You will be pleased to stroll through its small pedestrian streets, along the harbour, and enjoy a delicious Mediterranean meal on the terrace. Don’t miss the must-sees, such as the main theatre of Mahon, the Museum of Menorca, the Fortress of La Mola or the incredible Cathedral of Santa Maria.

But it is also a very lively city. In the evening, the party is honoured. The tapas bars are in the mood, and the evenings on the beach are good train, for the greatest happiness of fiesta lovers.

During this first step, then leave the capital to discover the small village of sinners of Es Castell, its small houses bleached with lime, and its soft atmosphere. Es Castell is renowned for having the most beautiful port on the island. You will also discover the castle of San Felipe, the Tower of En Pujat or Fort Marlborough.

Then take the road to Saint Lluis and its pretty mills. One of them houses an ethnological museum to discover more about the history of the island. Then continue your road trip to Minorca to reach Binibeca, and finish your day in this lovely white village of Minorca. The beach is falling!

2. To the northeast

Binibeca is a lovely fishing village, built around a cove. It is nicknamed by the inhabitants of the island the white village, because of its houses, bleached with lime. What makes all their charm is that none is identical. To refresh yourself, you will find many beaches around, such as the white sandy beach of Binibeca measuring more than 200 metres Long.

Then continue your road trip to Minorca and go back on your steps to Mahon, to take the ME-7 axis that will lead you to the village of Fornells. This is also an authentic fishing village, located in the heart of a bay, which is more than 4 kilometres long. Its fishing port is a full-fledged attraction, with as local star: the lobster.

You can enjoy it in all its forms in the restaurants of the village. Once restored, discover the city, discover its beautiful church of San Anton, then the tower of Fornells, for a sublime view of the bay. Fornells also offers a large number of water activities, such as windsurfing, kayaking or catamaran excursions.

In the vicinity, the beaches are beautiful, and especially the Cavalleria Beach and Cala Tirant Creek. Finish the day with a sunset at Cavalleria Lighthouse, before returning to Fornells to spend the night.

3. The city of Ciutadella

Leave Fornells, then drive to Ciutadella, the ancient capital of the island. You will fall under the charm of this picturesque town, which rivals with Mahon. It is also a must-see of the island, full of treasures not to be missed, such as its old town, its palaces Olivar, Squella, Saura and Martorell, or the Cathedral of Ciutadella Santa Maria. Ciutadella also contains beautiful museums, such as the Diocesan Museum and the Municipal Museum.

Don’t miss out on going to the fish market (peix marcat), for a moment filled with authenticity, close to the local population.

After a visit to the Castell de Sant Nicolau (Château de Saint Nicolas), enjoy a refreshing and relaxing break on one of the surrounding beaches. The Calas Turqueta, Son Saura or Macarella, will delight lovers of small coves. The beach of the north of La Vall – Algaiarens, will fill all those looking for large white sand areas.

Ciutadella is a must-see stage of any road trip in Minorca!

4. Detour by the south coast

From Ciutadella, go back to the south coast to discover the most beautiful beaches and coves on the island. Cala Santandria, Cala Blanca, or Cala en Bosc, are the best known. But we advise you to park your car in Cala en Bosc and to go on foot on the paths that border the coast, in search of small hidden and paradise coves.

Don’t miss the view from the Cap d’Artrux lighthouse, located near Cala en Bosc.

After a day when the blue color of crystalline waters dominated, go back to Ciutadella to spend a second night before continuing your road trip to Minorca.

5. Ferreries, in the heart of the island

During this stage of your road trip to Minorca, you will discover the archaeological remains of the island before reaching the village of Ferreries.

Start with Naveta des Tudons, a former collective funeral tomb. The site, older than 3000 years , is perfectly preserved. It is certainly the most emblematic prehistoric monument of Minorca. Then head to Cala Morell and its Necropolises. This other burial site is quite spectacular since it has fourteen numbered artificial caves, in which the collective burials took place at the time.

Enjoy the afternoon to sunbath on the beach of Cala Morell or Cala Algaiarens and then finish the day at the Punta Nati lighthouse for a breathtaking sunset. Then return to the village of Ferreries, to spend the night.

Ferreries is a beautiful village, located in the heart of the land of Menorca. You will fall under the charm of its colorful alleys. His geological museum is very interesting. If you have the chance to stay there on a Friday, you can then discover the very lively atmosphere of its artisanal night market.

Let yourself go for a walk around the village, unless you prefer to go back to your car to discover the Castle of Santa Agueda, 8km from there, or the prehistoric village of Son Mercer de Baix, located 4km away.

6. Back to Mahon by center

For your last day of road trip to Menorca, go back quietly to Mahon, crossing the center of the island. On the road, stop in the charming villages of Es Mercadal and Alaior.

Es Mercadal is a charming village with white houses, where Menorca Artisanal Center is located. It is an art gallery, inaugurated in 2005, offering its visitors permanent or temporary exhibitions on the traditional trades of the island and the minorquin heritage in general. To 5 minutes by car from the village, is Monte Toro, a summit culminating in 358 m , from which the 360° view is just splendid.

Then discover Alaior, and its charming city centre. For the little anecdote, the village had the nickname “the Montpellier minorquin”, during the French occupation of the island of Minorca in 1756. You will enjoy strolling through its alleys, and discovering the small local craft shops. Don’t miss the Gothic Church of Santa Eulalia, which you can visit with a guide, which will allow you to access the roof and a magnificent view.

Finish your road trip to Minorca, where you started it in Mahon, for a final evening in the heart of the capital.

Documents on board

During a road trip to Menorca, here are the documents you must have on board:

  • An identity document;
  • The driver's license;
  • The certificate of registration of the original vehicle;
  • The green insurance card.

Also consider having in your vehicle the following elements, which are mandatory:

  • Rescue wheel;
  • Replacement bulbs for headlights;
  • A reflective jacket;
  • Two emergency triangles;
  • An extinguisher.

Rules of conduct

For the Balearic Islands, the rules of conduct are the same as in Spain:

  • Conduct to the right;
  • Mandatory front and rear belt;
  • Mobile phone not flying;
  • Maximum speed limit set at 80 km/h;
  • Maximum alcohol level limit set at 0.5 g/L. of blood (0.3 g/L. for young drivers);
  • Traffic panels meet European standards.

Other information

If you want to go on a road trip to Menorca, you should know that the island has no highway or fast track. There is also no road to the island, but only a main and central artery, the ME-1, which joins Mahón in Ciutadella. From this artery, lead small narrow and winding roads to the coast, in the seaside resorts.
