History of the Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Modern Art in Vienna, or Mumok, was inaugurated on September 21, 1962 in the former Austrian Pavilion, 20er Haus , built by Karl Schwanzer in 1958, on the occasion of the Brussels Universal Exhibition. His founder and first director, Werner Hofmann acquired numerous works of classical modernism. In April 1979, while the museum was headed by the art historian Dieter Ronte, a second exhibition building was rented in the Liechtenstein Palace in Vienna-Alsergrund.
In 1977, Hans Mayr, then President of the Art Exhibition Building in Vienna, Künstlerhaus , organizes an exhibition of modern works of art belonging to Peter and Irene Ludwig. On this occasion, the couple of German collectors donated much of the works in his possession to the city of Vienna. A committee, set up by the then Austrian Federal Minister, organizes the long-term loan to the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna, part of the collection belonging to the Ludwig Foundation. In 1978, the acquisition of Wolfgang Hahn’s collection greatly expanded the museum’s heritage. New donations from the Ludwig Foundation will increase the Mumok offer over the years.
On September 15, 2001, the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna is reopened in the heart of the city’s museum district. The cubic building, designed by architects Ortner and Ortner and built in basaltic lava, offers an exhibition space of 4,800 m2. Today, Mumok has more than ten thousand works of modern and contemporary art.
