History of the Major Garden in Marrakech
In the early 20th century, the French painter Jacques Majorelle settles in Morocco. We are in 1919 and the country is still a protectorate administered by France. In 1922, he decided to acquire a palm grove northwest of the Medina of Marrakech. In 1929, he asked architects Robert Poisson and Paul Sinoir to build an artist’s villa-workshop, inspired by the Moorish styles and art-deco. The painter built his main residence there and created a tropical botanical garden, set on the style of the Islamic garden. With his travels, he reports many species and people his garden, composed of yuccas, jasmines, nympheas, coconut trees, orange trees, banana trees, bougainvilliers, fuchsias, cactus, agaves and, among other species, bamboo. How to visit the Majoral Garden in Marrakech?
You can view a visit plan online before entering the site. To visit the garden Majorelle, a sense of visit (not compulsory, fortunately!) is possible: you start with the fountain of the entrance to see, to the right, the typed plants. The Berber museum is open from 10am to 6pm and garden of Villa Oasis – accessible to people with reduced mobility – is open from 10am to 4pm .
