History of the Crypte des Capucins in Rome

The Capuchin brothers of Rome had a strange custom. At each death of one of them, they exhumed the remains of the monk buried for the longest time, to replace him with the one who had just died. When in 1631 they left the convent of Saint Bonaventura to settle in the church Santa Maria della Concezione , it is quite naturally that they take with them the bones of their deceased brothers. In total, they fill three hundred wagons of remains of dead monks. The deceased are again buried around the church for more than thirty years. When only the bones remained, they were transported into the crypt of the church, and arranged along its wall as decoration. The realization of this strange rite ended in 1870.
It is estimated that the bones of nearly four thousand monks, who died between 1528 and 1870, are now preserved in the Crypte des Capucins in Rome. The monastic church of the Capuchins
