History of the Picasso Museum of Barcelona

The Picasso Museum is located in the centre of Barcelona, in one of the five large houses and palaces of Montcada Street, built in the 13th and 14th century. Their charm comes from their Catalan gothic style.

The main building is the former Aguilar Palace, formerly owned by Berenguer Aguilar, and then several Catalan bourgeois families. In 1953, the city council decided to buy back the building and opened the Picasso Museum in 1963. As a step, the museum is enlarged and spreads gradually over the 4 nearby buildings: Baró de Castellet, Mecca, Finestres and Mauri. Today, the museum reaches almost 11,000 m2 of surface area.

The idea of the museum was blown by the personal secretary, but also friend of the great Picasso, named Jaime Sabartés . And it was Picasso who chose to implant the museum in Barcelona, where he arrived at the age of 14 to study the Fine Arts.

The collection he holds was made from work given by Secretary Jaime Sabartés or even by Picasso himself, his wife and many other donors. In total, the museum houses more than 4,000 pieces, mixing paintings, drawings, engravings, illustrations and ceramics.

The Barcelona Picasso Museum is open daily :

• On holidays, the palace closes at 3 p.m. or 5 p.m. depending on the day
• Monday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• From Tuesday to Sunday, from 9am to 8:30pm
• Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Closing days: 1 January, 1 May, 13 May, 20 May, 24 June and 25 December

• Reduced price: 7 €

Temporary Exhibitions Billet

• General Tariff: 6,5 €
• Reduced price: 4,5 €

Good to know: The reduced fare applies to the following visitors, upon presentation of a supporting document: young people from 18 to 25 years old, students, persons aged 65 and older, unemployed and holders of the Barcelona Library Card.
