The best Oxford Pubs

If you want to discover the history and character of Oxford, pubs can offer you as much as most of the more touristic sites. There are few things more satisfying than a good English pub when visiting England: a warm welcome, pleasant corners and corners where to settle, the history of the pub, excellent beers and tasty cuisine. Oxford has a spectacular range of large pubs . It would be a shame to leave Oxford without testing one or two. This is the kind of place to start the evening around a beer and a traditional dish. Here. the best pubs in Oxford :

The Turf Tavern, 4-5 Bath Place

Old pub with two bars still full and three outdoor courses. The drunk poet Dylan Thomas haunts the places, he is a favorite of the student community.

The Eagle and Child49 St. Giles

This long and narrow pub is the place where Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and others Inklings used to drink for more than 30 years. Sunday lunches are excellent.

Duke of Cambridge, 2 Hayfield Road

A relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with a slight chic touch. More importantly, there is a Happy Hour on the weekend that lasts 3 and a half hours!

Café Baba, 240 Cowley Road

Café Baba is a fabulous little cocktail bar with something that will appeal to everyone, from cocktails to large bottles of beer. The environment is actually a quiet place for the day or a drink in the evening, and it is fantastic for couples or groups.

Head of the River, Folly Bridge, St Aldates

It is a popular outdoor place in summer (which gives directly to the river, heating lamps are available), which is very frequent by students. It is often full especially during the rowing competitions.

Head of the River, The Riverside, Iffley Lock

Beautiful location by the Thames and only accessible by boat or by foot.

The Trout, Godstow Road, Wolvercote

The pub hung at the edge of the river in the pretty village of Wolvercote, an hour walk on the other side of Port Meadow. It has a large outdoor terrace, and a nice bridge connecting the terrace to a private garden on the other side of the river. In summer, it is crowded, especially when students bring their parents to eat.

The Bear, 6 Alfred Street

The Bear is the oldest pub in Oxford (1242), and is also one of the smallest (this place is not for the big as the ceiling is very, very low). We remember the pub for its collection of ties (!).

Royal Oak, 42-44 Woodstock Road

The pub, very frequented by the students, is often full and it is necessary to arrive early to find free places.

Best Oxford Bars

The only difference between Pub and Bars here is style and drinks on the map. The bars below are more lounge and serve cocktails in particular. If you want authenticity, choose pubs, and if you want music and a chic and laid frame, head to one of the bars below.

Anuba, 13 Park End Street

It’s the bar that is “ paired” at The Bridge nightclub.

All Bar One, 124 High Street

Strangely decorated, this bar is part of a chain present throughout England. Very quiet in the week, it's incredibly full on the weekend.

The House, Blue Boar Street

The cocktail bar The House is a real jewel for connoisseurs. Located at the bottom of Wheatsheaf Yard, right next to High Street, it is a real haven of peace away from the crowd with an elegant and sophisticated interior, and classy and delicious cocktails.

Raouls32 Walton Street

This retro paradise offers some of Oxford’s best cocktails, so if you’re in Oxford, you know where to go. The decor is both design and retro, the bar is bright and chromed and the choice of music is bold.

Thirst Bar, 7-8 Park End Street

Cocktail bar, big, animated, and DJs mix constantly. You will enjoy the surprisingly large and pleasant backyard.

Freud, 119 Walton Street

This one is impressive. What was once a church became Freud, a house of cocktails, pizzas and DJs. This place of worship has therefore returned his jacket and is now no longer a house of sins... while ancient relics have been preserved. So the frame is boned.

The Grand Café, 84 The High Street

A student favourite on Cowley Road, enjoying a large patio in the back. Wide range of special beers, with dishes.

and many others...
  • Summertown Wine Café
  • The Brickworks
  • The Living Room
  • The Cape of Good Hope
  • The White Horse
