Discovery of the Mayan ruins of Tulum
When you’re talking about Mexico, obviously, one of the first images that comes to your mind, they’re probably the pyramids. Yes, but what? Yucatan's? That of Chichén Itzá ? Among these highly touristic places, there is a wonderful site where the pyramids are still preserved and protected, a fantastic site that contains real discoveries for all lovers of the Mayan universe. This site is Tulum .
Understand the site of Tulum
Tulum is a Mayan city that was born almost 3000 years ago: pierced on a rocky tip, it dominates a magnificent turquoise sea, which is why diving and swimming enthusiasts also find themselves there.
A little further, offshore, the coral reef is the second most important in the world, nothing but that! Not to mention the idyllic beaches on nearly 10 km, you will understand why Tulum is close to what paradise must be on Earth. Tulum was one of the first cities discovered by the Spanish and was also one of the last to fall into their hands.
This site combines the culture and history of one of the greater civilizations in the world with the most beautiful beaches of the globe. It is an archaeological site by the sea, which is extremely rare. Tulum is an ancient Mayan fortress who experienced its peak at the end of the classic period, about 1000 of our era.

The iconic monument of Tulum is surely “El Castillo”: it is a temple dedicated to Venus. Its huge staircase leads to a temple supported by columns in the shape of a snake, which makes it look like the other great pyramid, Chichén Itzá . On its upper part there are three niches occupied by stucco figures, the central figure being the Bee God.
It should be noted that every Sunday, tourists can discover it free of charge so if you want to avoid crowd movements, prefer Tuesday to go. There are also small altars, small oratories that are located around the cove and in several places on the site of Tulum: these places are still considered sacred today because these altars were used to receive offerings.
Some considerations
Tulum is 125 km from Cancún Airport. It is recommended to arrive early enough because the affluence is enormous, not to mention the high heat in the middle of the day. Several packages exist, including the choice of transport, entrance and guided tour and you can ask them from your hotel.
To visit the Tulum site, please count about half a day but if you want to enjoy the beautiful beach at the foot of the cliff, accessible via a large staircase, then the day will be a better option.
