With more than 8 billion inhabitants, the Earth has never been so populated. Unfortunately, this population is unevenly distributed and there are areas on the planet almost lacking in inhabitants, while others grow under the weight of men.

1. China

With an estimated population of 1.5 billion, China is the world’s most populous country. Its population is concentrated mainly in rural areas, even if the mass exodus to the capital Beijing or the industrial poles that are Shenzhen or Shanghai is increasingly important in recent years.

As a reminder, between 2000 and 2019 China grew by 11.2% of its population. However, as many industrialized countries, China faces the ageing of its population, to the point where it would even fall by 2050 to 1.3 billion inhabitants.

Its population could also reach 400 million by 2050 according to the World Statistics Institute. Like China, the United States faces a sharp ageing of its population, which is why the country has opened immigration valves.

With nearly 270 million inhabitants, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country on the planet and the third most populous country in Asia. Its population grew between the 2000s and now from 214 million to 267 million. Either an increase of 25.6% over 19 years.

5. Pakistan

Its population has grown by 30.5 per cent. By 2050 there will be 193 million people living in Bangladesh.

9. Russia

Russia is the only country in this classification whose migration balance has been negative in the last 20 years. Its population has risen to 146 million.

This trend would be all the more important by 2050 if nothing is done. The country would lose up to 17 million inhabitants. This is the ninth most populous country in the world.

10. The Mexico

Mexico is a fairly well-placed country in terms of demographics. With an estimated population of 126 million, the direct neighbour of the United States experienced a giant jump in the size of his population, which increased by 32.6 per cent between 2000 and 2019. Mexico’s 10th most populous country in the world is expected to exceed 150 million inhabitants by 2050.
