Want to discover Thai culture and Bangkok's typical markets? Here's our selection of Bangkok's top 5 markets!
Bangkok is certainly the Asian capital par excellence of markets! We find some of them in every neighborhood, and the Thais rush there every day and night of the week to eat, drink and shopping. They are so many that it is difficult to survey them all on the same trip to Bangkok. So we present our selection of the top 5 markets in Bangkok, for an immersion in Thai culture.
1. Chatuchak, Bangkok's largest market
Chatuchack is a real institution in Bangkok. If it is also very popular tourists who love to get lost in the mazes of thousands of stands, Chatuchak is above all THE place to go out the weekend and stroll for the Thais. This is the largest market in the city, so immense that it is advisable to look at a plan before going there, especially if you are looking for a particular place! To get there, you just have to borrow the airline (BTS) and get off at Mo Chit station. ( see map )
2. Ratchada Rot Fai Market, the most local
There are some tourist trails this time with this night market, which takes place every evening from 6 p.m. until about 1 or 2 a.m. The Ratchada Rot Fai market is located at the exit of the Thailand cultural center metro and just behind the Esplanade shopping center ( see map ). This is an original place since each bar has a really nice vintage decoration! This is the meeting place of many Thais after work, because a whole part of the market is destined for street-food stands all more delicious than others.
3. Srinakarin Rot Fai Train market, the most original
In Bangkok, there is another market called Rot Fai, located this time near the large park of Srinakarin. It is well outside the city, and it is necessary to take a taxi to get there because the metro does not pass through there ( see map ). But despite the distance, this market is really worth the detour! It seems to be a mix between the Puces de Saint-Ouen in Paris and an American garage on Route 66. The lovers of antiques and original shops will be served as we find here many curiosities. The atmosphere is also very pleasant as many bars in the market offer concerts on weekends.
4. Chang Chui, the most modern
Chang Chui is both a night market but also a meeting place and an open-air contemporary art gallery. This place was inaugurated in 2017 and even if, again, it is far enough from the centre, going will not disappoint you! The park is built around vast statues and works of art, including an aeroplane carcass in a restaurant and bar. There are also small shops of very original designers, and equally original restaurants, such as the "Insects in the backyard" which offers... insects to be enjoyed. To get there, the best thing is to take a taxi from the center and ask Chang Chui. If he doesn’t know, tell him it’s on Sirindhorn Boulevard. ( see map )
5. Pak Khlong Talat
This Thai name refers to the market with very well-known flowers in Bangkok. This one is in the old town and if many travellers only visit it the day, we recommend you go there also the night that comes. Indeed, it is the evening that the thousands of flower vendors come to fill the stalls of their crops, and the fiery activity of this place is simply surprising! To get there, the best solution is to get there by taxi or tuk-tuk! ( see map )
Good discovery of Bangkok's markets!
