Are you going to visit the Greek islands of the Aegean? Here is our presentation of the must-sees to visit Patmos!
Located in the middle of the Aegean Sea, Patmos Island is an island Greece in the Dodecanese archipelago. With only 3,044 inhabitants (2001) out of 34,5 km2, the island is worldwide known to be the place where the Apostle Saint Jean , exiled on the island by Emperor Domitian, would have received visions and would have written the Revelation therein, otherwise called the Book of Revelation of Jesus Christ. The island was indeed a place of deportation under the Roman Empire.
By virtue of this historical fact, Patmos is a place of pilgrimage and cultural tourism. The medieval village of Patmos (Chora), built in 1138, is thus characterized by the religious fact: the inhabitants settle around the enclosure wall of the monastery of Saint-Jean-le-Théologien, built half a century earlier. The village is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Patmos lives mainly from tourism and suffers from difficulties in water supply and waste recycling.

It must be said that the alleys of the village were designed narrow to block the invasion of pirates and Turks, adding a historic charm to the site.
3. The three windmills of Chora
Located at the top of Chora hill, on a UNESCO World Heritage site and a historic site of pilgrimage, 2 of the mills date from 1588 and the third of 1663. From the 1950s, when the flour production was stopped, they were gradually abandoned.
Attrised to see them disappear, the Geneva private banker Charles Pictet decided to buy one to restore it. The operation is more complicated than expected, as the mills belong to the monastery. The project however sees the day and it is not one, but the three mills of the estate that are renovated, the monastery of Patmos remains master of work.
