One of the activities to be done in Prague if we are a street-art fan is to go to the Lennon Wall and participate in this endless work!
After his murder on 8 December 1980, John Lennon became a pacifist hero for many young Czechs. An image of Lennon was painted on a wall in an isolated square in front of the French Embassy (there is a place on the wall that looks like a tombstone), with many other political graffiti and Beatles’ words.
Despite the actions taken to paint the wall of lime, the secret police never managed to keep it clean for a long time, and it wall Lennon became a political orientation for young people in Prague (most Western pop music was banned by communists, and Czech musicians were even imprisoned for playing them).
After 1989 and the fall of the iron curtain, the ageing of the wall and the graffiti ended up hiding all the drawings, until nothing left of Lennon, otherwise his eyes, but the tourists began to contribute to this wild fresco.
The wall being the property of the Knights of Malta, they repainted it several times, but it quickly covered new images of John Lennon, messages of peace and other drawings. Thus, in recent years, the Knights have surrendered to the inevitable and are no longer bothering to blew this wall.
Today, the wall is a real tourist destination for many travelers. He continues to be painted and drawn. The work is therefore changing over the years that pass!
