Indiana state capital in the north of the United States, Indianapolis – nicknamed “Indy” – is a vast agglomeration of 966.3 km2. It is populated by 855 164 people, in an urban area with a total population of 1.75 million. Literally, Indianapolis means the "town of Indiana", polished being the Greek etymology of the word "city". The Amerindians of the Miami and Lenapes tribes who occupied the place were driven out.
Founded around 1825, the city grew in the 20th century with the rise of the automotive industry. It quickly becomes a large state capital.
So Indianapolis has a very young official history. However, it does not prevent it from being a cosmopolitan, artistic, cultural, gourmet and green city. In a word: a pleasant city to live. Indianapolis is a high place of mechanical sports. Are you visiting Indiana? Here is our presentation of the neighborhoods where to go and where to stay in Indianapolis!

Miles Square
Miles Square is the name given to downtown Indianapolis, which is also the business centre. There are 34 skyscrapers in the city, the headquarters of many companies and institutional and government buildings.
The neighbourhood is organized around the Soldier’s and Sailors Monument, a large circular square dominated by a neoclassical obelisk, built between 1888 and 1902, which stands at 66.7 metres high. It is a monument dedicated to soldiers and sailors who died during the Secession War (1861-1865). Around you will find restaurants, bars and a Mall with dozens of shops. In the city centre, don't miss seeing the Capitole, called Indiana State House: it can be photographed on Monument Circle, next door.
Do you like religious monuments? Visit the church of Saint John, very appreciated by the locals. On the other side of the White River, enjoy the Indianapolis Zoo. To conclude your visit to the centre, make the Indiana World War Memorial, an incredible free museum dedicated to First World War Veterans. Another must in the neighborhood: Union Station. Indianapolis would be the first city in the world to have designed a central station in 1848. Opened in 1853, the station serves large urban centres in the country. Its turn, in red bricks, is not without recalling the London Big Ben: as such, it is classified as "historical monument".
