Would you like to visit the capital of Thailand? This falls well: Wanderlix offers you to explore the incredible Lumphini district in Bangkok!
In the beginning... Lumphini is actually the Thai spelling of Lumbini: this is the place of birth of Buddha in the Nepal . The city is part of the 180 Khwaeng (districts) of the capital of Thailand, Bangkok.
Near Silom, Lumphini is a growing urban area that is similar to that of some in a neighbourhood whose centre is the park. It includes large shopping areas such as Phloen Chit Road. There is a business district near Witthayu, embassies and office towers. Some skyscrapers are designed to accommodate private apartments or hotels such as those of Ratchadamri and Lang Suan .
Visiting the Lumphini district is an experience of no other kind, it is certain: are you ready?
The district of Lumphini in a few words
The real heart of Lumphini district is its park. It was created in the 1920s by the king Rama VI on a royal property that was originally a museum. Moreover, a statue to the king’s glory stands still today at the southwest entrance of the park. This large green space was supposed to prove the expertise of Thai engineers in contemporary urban planning.
An interesting anecdote proves Thailand's dreadful development: at the time of its creation, the park was located on the outskirts of the city. But Bangkok, like any Asian metropolis that respects itself, has experienced a booming expansion. Today, the park is located in the heart of the main business district of the Thai capital.
What to see and what to do in the Lumphini district?
Lumpini Park
Visiting the Lumphini district park in Bangkok is a restful activity, a thousand places of adjacent urban stress. This is where the inhabitants of this megalopolis come to blow a little. This public park is very large, it measures almost 60 hectares! In this versatile park, many activities are proposed. Maintained and decorated with more or less effort and taste, the park is alone an experience. It includes trees, playgrounds, artificial lake and reptiles. Yes, varans walk freely in the middle of the tourists and rest in the sun. Do not be afraid, they are not mean. It is possible to rent boats to walk on the lake. Otherwise, you can follow the circular trail measuring 2.5km.
Attention: smoking is forbidden and dogs are not allowed!
The Lumpinee stadium
Yes! The Lumpinee stadium is a bit “M Mecca” of Thai boxing. It is the most famous of the seven stadiums in Thailand and there are fighting three nights a week. The rest of the time is at the rival stage, Rajadamnoen, that the fierce fighters battle.
Places are offered everywhere in the streets as the attraction for this sport is great in the kingdom of Siam. As a tourist, no miracle, the rates are higher than for the premises·les but what show! Thai boxing (muay-thai) is considered a violent sport but combatants respect each other: the activity, spectacular, keeps its promises. Given the cultural importance of boxing in Thailand, we recommend you go to Lumpinee Stadium. Visiting Lumphini in Bangkok without attending a gala would be a tourist sacrilege!
The Shrine of Erawan
Initially, the Erawan Shrine was built in 1956. He was at the time part of the Erawan Hotel, a government property. The proponents erected the sanctuary to conjure the evil fate. Indeed, the foundations of the hotel were dug at an unfavourable date for the Buddhist calendar! It was the Ministry of Fine Arts of Thailand that drew and set up this splendid place of worship. In 1987, the hotel was demolished and rebuilt.
Today we can always book a room there: it is the Grand Hyatt Erawan. The Thais are very attached to this Buddhist sanctuary which is continually covered with offerings. Very venerated, we're organising grandiose cult ceremonies every day. Traditional dancers come to represent themselves and honor the Spirit of the Fire. Don’t hesitate to visit the Lumphini neighbourhood in Bangkok.
