Do you know who was the origin of the first round of the world?
Today, making a world tour is accessible to anyone. With a few thousand euros in pocket and time in front of you, leaving for a trip around the planet is easy. This was not the case at the time of the great discoveries and the first round of the world.
The first round of the world or "circumnavigation" was carried out by a Spanish expedition led by Magellan (the Spanish naturalized Portuguese):
- Departure: 10 August 1519
- Return: September 6, 1522
Unfortunately, Magellan was not the first man to make a tour of the world since he died on April 27, 1521 wounded by an arrow in a battle in the Philippines.
Upon departure, the expedition consisted of 237 men spread over 5 ships:
- La Trinidad
- San Antonio
- La Concepcion
- Victoria
- Santiago
Of these 5 ships, only the Santiago arrived at the end of the journey with only 18 of the 237 Westerners left to travel around the world. The captain of the ship arrived was then Juan Sebastian Elcano, officially recognized as the first man had toured the planet.
Here is the chronology of the journey:

Today, making a tour of the world is no longer as epic as at the time. It is important to realize the exploit that the planet tower represented in a world where no precise map was established and where the distances were estimated with a great approximation!
