You're planning a trip to Brazil but don't know where to go? Discover the state of Bahia and the neighbourhoods where to stay in Salvador!
Salvador de Bahia, located on a peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Baia de todos os Santos – the bay of all saints - is a Brazilian megalopolis of 2,902,927 inhabitants and 3.2 million in the agglomeration. The former capital of Brazil (from 1549 to 1763) is a mosaic of cultures with multiple influences, inherited from African, European and Amerindian presences having forged its identity. El Salvador’s former economic and cultural lung, today attracts tourists for its magnificent beaches, the beauty of its historic centre – which has been registered by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1985 – and for carnival (the largest popular street carnival in the world). Salvador would be less dangerous than its sisters from South Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In terms of accommodation, you can find hotels or accommodation in the cheapest home, even in the centre.
The city subdivides into a high part – the Cidade Alta - and a lower part, called cidade baixa. On the outskirts of the centre you will find multivariate neighborhoods with strong social gaps (pavillons, favelas, luxurious buildings, etc.). This is where to sleep in Salvador!
Centro

Hidden on a rocky promontory along the western shores of the peninsula and on the edge of the bay of all saints ( Baia de todos os Santos ), the historical centre of Salvador de Bahia is an open-air museum. It is a very colourful, popular neighbourhood, composed of streets and monuments dating from the time of colonial Brazil (17th-19th century). Ancient huppé quarter, the Centro has become the vibrant heart of the cultural life of Afro-Brazilians, especially in music and capoeira. On the Largo do Pelourinho , you will see a splendid place that masks a painful past: this was the place of punishment of the black slaves when the slave market beat its full. The Terreiro de Jesus , Praça da Sé , of multiple palaces and monuments (Casa de Camara, the Rio Branco Palace, the facade of solar Ferrão , many churches, etc., are essential.
The area has many historic buildings, lots of lively places – bars and terraces –, percussion concerts in the street. Every Tuesday evening, the neighborhood party on the Terreiro de Jesus or the Largo do Pelourinho is held. We play and dance the samba. So much to say that the centre’s quarter is very festive, taken from the noctambula and that it’s the place to stay in Salvador if you like partying, music and culture.

Nestled between the neighborhoods of Amarnath and Ondina, Rio Vermelho – which means “red river” – is described as one of the most beautiful districts of Salvador. Located by the ocean – south of the peninsula – it is a vibrant, active and festive popular neighbourhood, a pleasant area where to stay in Salvador. A bohemian atmosphere reveals itself to the visitor who, after having attended (or danced) on a street concert of samba, can go to taste in the many taverns and gargotes of the neighborhood, to the traditional "cajerés de Cira", Brazilian specialty.
