To explore the eastern coast of the United States and Pennsylvania? Discover our guide to the best areas to stay in Philadelphia!

Fifth largest city in the United States, located between New York and Washington, Philadelphia – nicknamed Philly – has a population of 1,526,066 souls and 5,965,343 in the entire urban area. The city is a major historical, cultural and artistic center of the country, and also a large industrial port on the Delaware River, throwing itself into the North Atlantic Ocean. Former capital of the United States, the city is the main metropolis of the state of Pennsylvania. The main epicenter of the philosophy of the Enlightenment under the aegis of B. Franklin and the home of the American Revolution in the 18th century, Philadelphia experienced his golden age before declining after the industrialization of the country, and then met many mutations in the 20th century.

The city is not very touristic overall, and many of its neighborhoods are not very frequent. For this reason, the editorial will focus in this article only on the central areas where to stay in Philadelphia.

Center City

Downtown is the business centre of Philadelphia, as in most cities in the United States. It is wet on both sides by the Schuylkill on the west, and the Delaware on the east. It is, however, a busy, very commercial city centre and there are not only high-rise banking towers that they touch the belly of the clouds. You will find it Center City – the heart of the city -, Rittenhouse Square – the trendy part of the center – and Museum Row , where museums are to be visited. Dominated by the majestic City Hall, Center City houses Independence Hall, the place where the Declaration of Independence of the country was signed in 1776, the founding act of the United States Republic, and creating the first American institutions.

In the area you will find many cultural activities to do, including the following visits: Pennsylvania Convention Center , The Franklin Institute , the Museum of Natural History, the Cultural Center of the Philadelphia College of Physicists, or the African American Museum of Philadelphia. Don't miss the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, which is equivalent to the Fine Arts Museum. In addition, many parks cross the streets of different neighborhoods in the city centre, in the middle of an incredible concentration of bars where to party and restaurants. This is where we will find most of the hotels in Philadelphia, but the invoice may be salted...

It is one of the interesting historical districts to visit in Philadelphia, composed of many small cafes and shops, and very artistic, especially thanks to the experimental theatre festival (Le Fringe), in September. There are also several famous art galleries on 2nd and 3rd streets. In the perimeter of this old quarter, enjoy visiting the Benjamin Franklin Museum, the American Revolution Museum and also the National Museum of Jewish American History. In the beautiful days, Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing and S. Christopher Columbus Boulevard allow beautiful walks along the Delaware River.

In the north of Center City, there is a small tin of China and Taiwan, between N. Broad Street and Vine Street Avenue. There are many Chinese and Asian cuisine restaurants, as in every Chinese neighborhood, and countless shops where you can find souvenirs and cheap little ones. Staying next to Race Street promises to be cosmopolitan, lively, perhaps noisy, and will offer a central position to explore the city.
