Second city Slovakia and road crossing between the European Union and Eastern Europe, Kosice was bordered by the Hornád River and had 239,171 inhabitants in 2016. Surrounded by the mountains of the Čierna Hora north and hills Volovské vrchy To the west, the city is located near the Slovak Metallifer Mountains and offers beautiful hiking in the middle of nature. Kosice, like many Eastern European cities, was torn and dies during his history, especially during the Second World War. Seating from several universities, the constitutional court of Slovakia, Catholic dioceses, the city has many religious and institutional buildings.
With its pedestrian city centre where different architectural styles and different epochs cross, Kosice does not lack interest but is often swamped by travellers. Accommodation in Kosice will be relatively cheap for a European city.
Looking for a place to sleep in Kosice, we've been thinking about the atmospheres that the city has to offer to its guests. Here is a brief description of the neighbourhoods where to stay in Kosice.
Old town
The Old Town – Staré Mesto in Slovak – is the center of the city, with the Hlavná street , neuralgic heart of the neighborhood and tinted with Hungarian influences. By crossing the area, you will certainly fall on the Sainte-Élisabeth Cathedral , built in 1378 and 1508: it is the most eastern Western Gothic cathedral in Europe. The State Theatre , with its lyre-shaped scene, was built in a neo-baroque style between 1879 and 1899. The interior is decorated with sumptuous ornaments and scenes of Shakespeare’s tragedies (Othello, Romeo and Juliet, The Song of a Summer Night).
During your walks, take a look at the baroque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture of the buildings, then take a look at the Museum of Eastern Slovakia (not dedicated to the Soviet era, but to the history of Slovakia since the Stone Age). The most visited museum in the city, over 500 000 items are on display!
Walk on Hlavna Street to see the ancient monuments and buildings of the city: the Saint-Michel Chapel, the Urban Tower, the statue of the Immaculate, the house of Levoča, the church of the Holy Trinity, the House of the Mendiant (dating from the 14th century), former medieval prison Miklušova väznica (built in the 15th century) or the old prison of the city and the column of the plague (emergency of 1709). In addition, the area houses the majority of bars, terraces and restaurants in the city. Not far, find the Central station and Mestsky Park. We believe it is the best area to stay in Kosice.

Outside the city centre
Stay in Kosice outside the centre? The neighbourhoods adjacent to the centre are residential cities where you can feel like you’re in the countryside, while being close to the city centre. The peripheral neighbourhoods will therefore be suitable for expatriate families who come to stay in Kosice for the long term. We can stay there to visit Kosice zoo – to the north - to see Lake Ruzin, climb to the ski resort of Jahodna (in winter), climb to the tower of Kosice to the castle of the city (in the Sever district), the Botanical Garden of Kosice (in Sever) or see the surrounding villages. South of the city, enjoy a getaway to Jazero Lake (Nad Jazerom) but there will be much less accommodation to sleep in Nad Jazerom than in the north.
