A trip to the center of the Earth
Have you ever wondered what would look like inside a volcano? You may have even wondered if it was possible to visit one?
Know then Thrihnukagigur , just a few kilometers from the Icelandic capital Reykjavik , will start his third season of guided tours. During a “travel” with a local agency, you will have the opportunity to descend in the heart of the volcano , 122 meters deep, within one of the three magmatic chambers of the volcano (endormi, you are reassured) of Thrihnukagigur through an opening of only 3.5 meters in diameter.
This is the only place on earth where you can take a lift to get down inside the magmatic room of a volcano.
Once on site, it is not the uncanny name of the volcano that will leave you without a voice, but good exceptional experience to travel to the center of the Earth, where the last lava eruption took place 4000 years ago.
The magmatic room and corridors have an area equivalent to three basketball courts and we could house almost three Statues of Liberty up there.
As was said, volcano Thrihnukagigur has not experienced eruption for four millennia and does not risk “exploding” as soon as possible. The good news for you, is that the time makes its work since the room is colored from all sides, but above all, it is accessible. Indeed, usually after an eruption, a volcano is mouthed following the cooling of the lava. Now, this Icelandic volcano opened its doors for you.
The tour includes a 3.2-kilometre hike through a lava field to the crater. Then, after filtering a helmet and a safety harness, you will board a sort of elevator crane open to finally sneak into the crater, which will take about five minutes.
Once inside, you will have time to explore, take pictures and amaze yourself (or totally be afraid) with the idea of being in a real volcano .
Thrihnukagigur opened for the first time to the public in the summer of 2012, and visits took place again last year. The tour takes 5 to 6 hours and during this day you will even have the chance to drink Icelandic meat soup while you are in the old.
Count 240€ to explore the volcano of Thrihnukagigur . The price is reasonable when you know it is the only place where you can make such a visit!
And here's a video to show you how the day in the volcano takes place, more in detail:
Does this make you want to try the adventure in the heart of the volcano?
