When you visit the Serenesime, you like to lose yourself in its alleys, discover its treasures that are centuries old and the spectacle of the gondolas on the canals of the city. For the majority of travellers, this is enough. However, if you have the curiosity of visiting the surroundings of Venice, you should know that there are many excursions to the day to go from Venice. Very interesting escapades and not to be missed!

1. The islands of Venice: Torcello, Burano and Murano

🛥 in By boat: The best thing is to start with Torcello, the furthest, at 1h30 from the central station. Take the 5.2 fluvial line to F.te Nove and then 12 to Burano and finally 9 to Torcello. Then make the reverse path with a stop in Murano accessible with line 12.

We can't visit the Serenissime without discovering its islands! It is therefore important to be able to devote a day trip from Venice. Three of them hold our attention: Torcello, Burano and Murano.

Torcello is the furthest. Not known, it has unique Byzantine architectural treasures in the region.

Right next to it, Burano is famous for its colorful houses, which we like to discover on foot or on the terrace of a coffee. Finally, close to the main island, Murano is worldwide known for its art of glass. A museum is dedicated to it. There is also a lighthouse dating from 1934.

2. Lido of Venice

Here is a real day trip from Venice without leaving the city! The Lido is an amazing line of 11 kilometers long. We discover pretty villas and hotels.

The Lido is certainly the ideal place to rest the beautiful days since it is simply the beach of Venice!

3. Padua

🚆 By train: regular trains from Venezia Santa Lucia in 28 minutes

This is another classic of day trips from Venice. Padua is a beautiful dive in the art of living in Italian. The architecture is sublime and, in the beautiful days, the sunlight illuminates buildings, places and terraces.

The main attraction is the Prato della Valle, where statues and bridges overlap the canal. Dating from the 14th century, the Basilica of Saint Anthony is also a beautiful discovery. The walk in the alleys of the old town allows us to find some treasures here.

4. Trévise

🚆 By train: accessible by regional train from Venezia Santa Lucia in 50 minutes

Treviso is a nice trip from Venice. The city is one of the few to have well preserved ramparts and can be admired from many places. The old town and its canal are not without recalling Venice!

The city of Treviso is pleasant the beautiful days when you can sit on many terraces. Finally, the most amazing work is undoubtedly the Fontana delle Tette. As its name suggests, the water of the fountain flows from the breasts of the statue!

5. Lake Garda

Traditional excursion from Venice, Lake Garda offers many activities. Near Sirmione, south of the lake, it is possible to visit an ancient Roman city, called today the cave of Catulle, and the castle of Scaligero. Further north, you can go to the island of Garda or enjoy a swim in the summer.

There are also some theme parks, the best known being Gardaland. Lake Garda is above all fabulous landscapes, a mix between water and the nearby summits, and unique colors.

6. Prosecco Tour

Maybe you didn't know that, but the Veneto is the region Prosecco ! Why not take a day trip from Venice?

Excellent idea but where to go exactly? Prosecco’s name is not as protected as its famous French cousin, champagne, so we need to know where to go.

Near Trieste, if a city is called Prosecco, you will only go if you have time because it is not the best. Instead you have to go to Treviso, around Conegliano and Valdobiaddene. Many vineyards, beautiful landscapes: if you like Prosecco, then don’t hesitate... But with moderation!

7. Euganean Mountains and Montegrotto

Montenegrotto Terme is, as its name suggests, a spa town. We discover the ruins of a huge Roman complex. Today we go to relax for a day in the modern complex to enjoy hot water sources.

This trip from Venice continues to the Euganean Mountains. Collines of volcanic origin, they offer a perfect terrain for beautiful hikes. The views are beautiful.

8. Trieste

Here is an original day trip from Venice! Close to the Slovenia , often tirailed between several countries, Trieste enjoys this mix of cultures. The city has beautiful Roman ruins, as well as typical Italian symbols such as Piazza Unità d’Italia.

The Molo Audace is a seaside ride with locals as holidaymakers. Finally, the city is not visited, its inhabitants are very welcoming to tourists, which is not always the case in Italy!

9. Dolomites National Park

10. Verona

Verona! Has the city been made famous by Shakespeare? In the eyes of some, Verona is a day trip from Venice only to see the house and balcony of Juliette. If it’s nice to find her soul sister on the walls of the house, there’s so much more to see!

Verona is a small concentration of alleys of another era, where one loves to lose oneself, and hidden riches. Piazza Bra and its superb amphitheatre dominate the city. Other places such as Piazza Delle Erbe, but also many bridges, with Castelvecchio as a point of pride, are also discovered.

11. Bolzano

Mountain life for a few hours? Bolzano is a trip from Venice that seems ideal. Like Bergamo, Bolzano has a nice city centre, as well as famous monuments. Among them, Roncolo Castle.

The main attraction of Bolzano remains its cable car from Colle, which takes you to the heights. The summits are regularly snowed in winter and offer stunning views of the city.

12. Bologna

Town too often left aside, Bologna must be an unmissable day trip from Venice. Symbolised by Piazza Maggiore, the old town is one of the most beautiful in Italy. We discover a rich history, including the oldest university in the world.

The immense advantage of Bologna is that all major attractions are quite close. Everything can be done on foot. Of course, charcuterie lovers will be at the angels, Bologna being the birthplace of the mortadelle!

Finally, the athletes will be able to combine in two. Bologna is also known for its arcades. From the center, walk under the latter towards the exit of the city. At the end? Monte Guardia, dominated by the splendid Madonna di San Luca Shrine! In addition to visiting a magnificent place of worship and passing under the arcades, you will discover a majestic panorama of the city of Bologna.

Ah and little detail that adds cachet to this last step: to go up to the sanctuary, you will pass under... 666 arcades.

13. Ferrara (Ferrare)

This trip from Venice has a special feature to it. The town of Ferrara has more or less belonged to a family, the family of Este. Almost all the remarkable buildings of the old are heritages of this great family of the region.

The most famous of them is the castle of Este, which sits in the middle of the old city as a trophy in view of its remarkable conservation. Ferrare is also a cultural city since it has a very complete archaeological museum. Finally, the streets of the old are very pleasant and we discover excellent restaurants!

14. Vicenza (Vicence)

Officially Vicence in French, name little usity, Vicenza is the great forgotten of Veneto. It must be said that the city is in the midst of much more famous attractions and that few make it a day trip from Venice.

Yet, the city has many points of interest. The most famous are the main square and its Basilica Palladiana. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a superb example of the Venetian villas of the Renaissance. The old town is easily visited, with many local shops and cafes to relax in a little crowded city.

15. Bergamo

A day trip from Venice for travellers with time in front of them, however, Bergamo is an excellent choice. Unknown city, close to lakes Como and Garda, Bergamo is often forgotten by tourists.

Yet, the city has one of the best preserved Venetian fortifications in the region. Its old town bears witness to a rich past and a city of passage. One. must that you enjoy at the terrace of any café located in Piazza Vecchia!
