Capital of Portugal and “World City”, Lisbon is a vast urban conurbation open to the mouth of the Tage and the Atlantic Ocean. With 2,821,876 inhabitants throughout the urban area, Lisbon is the 15th most populous city of the European Union. Instead of staying in a mineral and concrete universe, why not escape on its beautiful coastline that encloses the capital?

The beaches of Lisbon are threatened by an elevation of the sea level (consequence of global warming?) of about 50 centimeters, which may cause some sandy beaches to disappear. To enjoy it as long as it is still time, here is our selection of the best beaches in Lisbon!

1. Praia da Areia Branca

His name literally means "white sand beach." Located north of Lourinhã, it is one of the best beaches in Lisbon where to surf, bodyboard, mini-golf and sunbath on the sand.

2. Praia da São Julião

Located north of Sintra coast, Praia de São Julião Beach offers a range of sand of 250 meters long. But it is above all one of the most popular beaches in Lisbon. And for cause: it is surrounded by high cliffs to enjoy a breathtaking view of the city of Ericeira. It is also a place for hiking and surfing.

Another important fact, Praia da São Julião is the first beach of Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

3. Praia de Magoito

This beach is famous for being overlooked by a natural rock dune, formed by the accumulation of sand brought by the wind and the ocean. By the road, you can access the villages of Magoito or Fontanelas. On foot, you have to borrow a long wooden bridge from the top of the cliff.

Also, the southern part is not crowded. Think about favouring this part!

4. Praia das Maçãs

We get closer to Lisbon by going south on a beach dedicated to families: Praia das Maçãs. The " Apple Beach" is accessible by the city of Sintra and offers a very wide sandy bench where to relax with natural pools. It is therefore ideal if the ocean is painful.

5. Praia da Adraga

Praia da Adraga is located in the middle of Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. So the place is idyllic. On the other hand, the place is crowded in the summer, in addition to being difficult to reach by car (car few parking spaces).

But its 400 meters in length and topography make it a paradise for surfers and swimmers. It would even be one of the 20 most beautiful beaches in Europe. Don't miss, by leaving, making a detour to Cabo da Roca the westernmost point of the European continent.

The beach of Guincho is one of the most popular of the Cascais-Sintra coast, between city and mountain, sheltered with winds and hosts many international sports competitions (surfing, windsurfing, windsurfing). It is one of the most touristic beaches of Lisbon, located along the Estoril railway station, east of Cascais. There are many bars and discotheques to celebrate. If you are looking for a strip of sand where you can sleep quietly, instead move to the beaches of the north coast.

9. Praia de Carcavelos

We feel that we are getting closer to Lisbon: the beach of Carcavelos, in the suburbs of Paris, is literally stormed in the summer. Accessible by train from Lisbon, it offers the largest band of sands of the beaches of Lisbon. Many bars and restaurants will also make it a party.

We pass on the south coast of the beaches of Lisbon! The Meco beach, close to Setúbal, is sheltered by a clay cliff. Good to know: it’s a popular place of Portuguese naturists, but on the north coast, families can easily come to it without being molested (for the most fierce).
