1. Tivoli

Just 30 minutes from the capital, Tivoli is one of the best day trips from Rome. The historic city houses a collection of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Its main architectural treasures are its three tiburtine villas: the villa Hadriana (II century), the villa of Este (XVI century) and the villa Gregoriana (XIXth century). The sanctuary of Hercules, the temples and vestiges of its Roman amphitheatre are also to be discovered.

2. Parc des Castelli Romani

The Castelli Romani Regional Park is a protected area located in the Alban hills. It is punctuated with palaces, castles and archaeological ruins. The park also contains 17 villages, some of which deserve a stop. This is the case of Velletri, Lanuvio, Genzano, Ariccia and Marino, among others.

But the unmissable stage of the place is Castel Gandolfo and its pontifical villas. His visit will provide you with more information on the history of the region. Climb to the castle of the city, the latter offers an incredible panorama of the surrounding area.

3. Ostia

Ancient port of ancient Rome, Ostie is nowadays a seaside resort that houses an archaeological site. The most essential elements of the "Ostia Antica" are the baths of Neptune, the Capitole, the theatre, the Forum and its decumanus maximus , the urban axis that passes through the city.

Most of the discoveries highlighted date back to the seventh century. This is worth a look!

4. Cerveteri

Located less than an hour’s drive from the capital, Cerveteri is renowned for its Etruscan necropolis and its well preserved tombs. Impressive, this element is not the only historical site in the city.

Join the castle of Ruspoli, visit the National Museum of Cerite – which gathers the artifacts of the necropolis – and walk on Place Saint-Pierre. An excellent visit that deserves to be part of the best excursions from Rome!

5. Orvieto

This place of pilgrimage deserves its place in the list of day trips from Rome. Do not leave until you have seen the churches, the Roman amphitheatre, the temple of Minerve, the palace of the People’s Captain (XIIIth century) and the palace of the Priests (XIVth century).

7. Anzio

Known since Antiquity, the city of Anzio is a renowned fishing port that offers beautiful beaches about an hour from Rome. A seaside resort, the city also witnessed a decisive landing during the Second World War.

It is recommended that you associate the visit of Anzio with that of one of the islands of the coast (Ponza, Palmarola and Ventotene) during your excursions from Rome. Boat departures are made from the port of Anzio.

8. Santa Marinella

Built in the 14th century, this monument currently houses a museum on the history of the region and a museum of the Sea and Navigation.
