Ohrid, the secret jewel of Macedonia

Ohrid is a little town still unknown that should quickly make her talk about by her beauty

In the south-west of Macedonia, the city of Ohrid (which is also the capital of that region) is part of UNESCO’s world heritage, especially for its religious heritage. It is one of the most popular sites in Macedonia, located near a lake with the same name.

Discover the city

The city of Ohrid was dominated by a gigantic fortress whose only High Gate is still present today. But the many churches that enamel the city and the monasteries testify to a heritage and great wealth . At the level of the low city, you will be able to circulate in the narrow alleys with undeniable charm.

This city is considered to be cradle of Slavic Christianity , it is called the "bead of the pearls of the Balkans", drowned in an evergreen vegetation, located at the foot of violet mountains.

What to see in Ohrid?

First, there is the Cathedral of St. Sophia, which dates back to the 11th century and remains remarkable for its medieval frescoes. The church of Saint-Clément, from the 13th century, dominates the entire city and contains a collection of pictorial icons of Byzantine and Slavic inspiration.

From the church of Saint-Jean-de-la-Canée, you can admire a sublime view of the whole lake: the setting is simply breathtaking. In the Old Town (low city), everything is on foot: it is the best way to admire the old houses of the 18th and 19th century with their balconies in encorbellishment. They are recognized with their white facades holed by the alignments of large windows enhanced with wood. The shopping district is a must to discover because the diversity of the shops is incredible.

Go also have a drink in one of the most hupped bars on the beach Cuba Libre, well installed in one of the sofas right in front of the lake! Spend time on the pebble beaches, soak up this unique atmosphere in the heart of Macedonia!

Why go to Ohrid?

In addition to the fact that it is one of the jewels of Macedonia in UNESCO, Ohrid fascinates and seduces by its architecture, its history, its artistic influences but also its marina and beaches. Walk around the streets of Ohrid, stroll around the rhythms of many small churches, lose yourself in narrow streets, discover the Old Town with Byzantine accents. Ohrid, it is also its lake that makes the joy of tourists looking for a seaside resort: it is considered one of the most transparent lakes in the world and full of original fauna and flora. To make the most of the lake, get out of the heart of Ohrid and go to the beaches of Gravice, Gorica and Saint-Stéphane.

Finally, for hiking enthusiasts, it is necessary to know that the city of Ohrid is overlooked by the massif of Galitchitsa, itself registered in a national park with the same name. To discover an extraordinary fauna and flora (between brown bears and lynx for example), admire the sumptuous panoramas, it is the ideal place to be.
