The world capital of skiing and mountaineering, this charming little town of high mountain welcomes every year 2.5 million tourists. It is, with Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, the highest commune in France, and for cause: the territory extends to the summit of Mont Blanc, at 4,810 metres above sea level, the highest point in Western Europe. The town’s top-place of tourism, mountain sports and winter sports makes use of the fact that Mont Blanc is the third most visited natural site in the world.

Downtown

Choosing the city centre to stay in Chamonix will present the advantage of being close to the cable cars to climb on the ski area, or in the summer, hiking trails. With on one side the cable cars to climb to Bréven (summ at 2,525 meters above sea level) – overlooking the valley, it offers a superb view of the Mont Blanc – and the other, that to go to the Aiguille du Midi (3 842 meters above sea level). By taking the municipal road, you can go to visit the Glacorium – a space dedicated to glaciology and the impact of climate change on the Mont Blanc glacier – and the ice sea.

A large concentration of restaurants will allow you to taste savoyard dishes during a cheese festival. For adults and children, the city has a casino, a cinema, and its bowling. Attention: it can be expensive to stay in Chamonix-centre, because it is an easy and very tourist area all year round.

Les Praz-de-Chamonix

The hotels in the centre are all stormed and it freezes to stone. Don't panic! We can stay north of Chamonix, towards Les Praz-de-Chamonix , which gives the advantage of being close to the Golf de la Ville and the cable car of La Flégère. It allows to hike on the slopes of Aiguille de la Floria , peaking at 2,888 metres above sea level. It is a popular mountain range among climbers. Climbing, hiking, skiing... Saint-Gervais-les-Bains
