On August 15, 1843 they opened at the initiative of the King of the Kingdom of Denmark, Christian VIII. The monarch is then confronted with the keen desire of the population to move to a constitutional regime and seeks to protect the absolute monarchy. The founder of the Tivoli Gardens, Georg Carstensen , manages to convince the king of the merits of his project. He would have said to him: “When the people have fun, they do not think about politics.”
At the time, Copenhagen is a fortified city in the midst of a boom, with 120,000 inhabitants. The success of the gardens is immediate! The Copenhaguois flock in number to enjoy the softness of the space offered to them, which is then located outside the city. Today, urban spreading forces, the park is located in the heart of the capital.
The success of the Tivoli gardens is not left to chance. The project is ambitious and inspired by major models: the Vauxhall in London and the Tivoli gardens in Paris. Yet, the Copenhagen Gardens have their own identity... It is not for nothing that they are often considered the first amusement park in the world! Manèges, exhibitions, pantomimes, concerts, costumes, edifices form a unique atmosphere, inspired by the fairy tales and tinted with Orientalism, which then ignites the imagination of Europeans.
But not only: because the name of the park is a tribute to Tivoli , Italian city located near Rome, famous for its sumptuous villas and especially for... Their gardens! In particular the Villa d’Este, a real masterpiece of Italian architecture that has marked the entire Renaissance by its ingenious and beautiful gardens.
