The history of the Lobkowicz Palace

Built in a Renaissance style, the Lobkowicz Palace was built in the second half of the sixteenth century by the noble family of the Pernštejn. It is Vratislav de Pernštejn, then Chancellor of the Czech Kingdom, who finishes the building.

His wife will bring from his native land of Spain the famous statue of the Child Jesus of Prague, to which healing powers are lent – which is now in the Church of Our Lady Victorious, in the district of Malá Strana – a replica that replaces her now.

The palace became the property of the Lobkowicz in 1627. The Lobkowicz will see their influence grow thanks to the victory of the Catholics on the Protestants during the Battle of the White Mountain, at the very end of the Thirty Years War. The palace will then be essential for them to maintain their presence in the castle, seat of power in Bohemia. After the Thirty Years War, it will be renovated by an Italian architect, who will give it its baroque style.

The palace will be confiscated by the Nazis in 1939 and then by the Communists before being returned to the Lobkowicz family in 2002.

Today, the palace has turned into a museum and hosts a permanent exhibition that presents the private collection of the Lobkowicz family.

Description of the building and visit of the Lobkowicz Palace

At first in Renaissance style, the palace was transformed in the 17th century under the impulse of the 2nd Prince Lobkowicz. The architect Carlo Lurago will then give the palace its current baroque appearance.

Despite alterations, it is always possible to see the wall paintings of the 16th century in the inner courtyard.

The richness of the palace comes mainly from its collection of art, archives and objects of time. There are paintings by great masters such as Velázquez, Brueghel, Canaletto, but also musical instruments, original manuscripts and music scores by Händel, Haydn and Beethoven. It is also possible to admire a collection of war or hunting weapons.
