It was during the 11th century, under the Almoravide dynasty, that the sovereign Sultan of Morocco Youssef Ben Tachfine melts this vast oasis at the foot of the Massif de l’Atlas for the purpose of exploiting local phreatic napps to protect themselves from heat. The Palmeraie of Marrakech then uses an underground ancestral channel network khettara , to irrigate the hectares of palm trees and crops there.

It is in its many cultures and its production of dates, palm oil, palm wine, palm hearts and wood, that the Palmeraie draws its economic influence. But over time, men have been able to take ownership of this place and develop an annexed economy related to tourism, combining natural heritage and modern urbanism.
