The scenerama of Madame Tussauds Amsterdam is a replica of the museum of the same name created in London in 1835 by Marie Tussauds (1761-1850), creator of wax statues. Royal personalities, political leaders, actors, singers, actors and other world celebrities are decided for the pleasure of all, but especially for children and adolescents.
The story of Madame Tussauds
Created in 1970 on Dam Square in the Dutch capital, the Dutch museum of Madame Tussauds was the first to export from England outside of London.
Marie Tussauds, born Marie Grosholtz in Strasbourg in 1761, was orphaned by a soldier father who fell during the Seven Years War (1756-1763). At her birth, her mother took her to Bern (Switzerland) where she worked as a maid for Philippe Curtius, a doctor, physicist and wax sculptor.
Installed in Paris, he will teach Marie Tussauds how to create portraits of wax. Talented, she made the portrait of Voltaire in 1777, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Benjamin Franklin in 1778. From the French Revolution to the Terror until 1799, she produced many portraits of famous personalities, including Napoleon.
Convicted to death during the Revolution, she would have escaped the guillotine thanks to the intervention of the painter Jean-Louis David (1748-1825). She then realized a series of mortuary masks in wax of guillotined people (Marie-Antoinette, Marat, Robespierre, etc.).
Marie Tussauds moved to London in 1802, but it was much later in 1835 that she created a permanent exhibition in London, Baker Street. The portraits of criminals and guillotined victims of the Revolution are presented in the "House of Horrors".
At his death in 1850, the collection of Madame Tussauds had more than 400 wax achievements.
