Louis Vuitton Foundation: presentation and history
The project to create a foundation dates back to 2001, Bernard Arnault – one of the largest French fortunes – meets the architect Frank Gehry , to whom he entrusts the project of a building for its foundation. The latter is inspired by the architecture of Grand Palais de Paris and glassware of the Jardin d’Acclimatation, and gives the building the shape of a sailboat inflated by the west wind, thus giving the illusion of the movement.
With an area of 11,779 m2, the dimensions of the Louis Vuitton Foundation’s building are impressive: 40 meters high, each floor making 9 meters high, surrounded by gigantic windows double its volume. The building is also surrounded by a watershed, powered by a gentle sloping cascade. The complex geometry of the building required multiple studies and mobilized the efforts of more than 700 workers.
