History of the London Eye
A change of century
The year 2000, is it talking to you? In France, the year 2000 bug doesn’t take place, the week at thirty five hours is adopted, the presidential term is reduced to five years and the Blues become European football champions. In London, the London Eye comes out of the ground and enters its first year. Set up to celebrate the change of century, the wheel is today a symbol of the British capital. Tourists from all over the world embark on one of its nacelles and look forward to climbing to a hundred and five meters high.
Seven years and seventy-five million pounds strerling were needed to build the London Eye. Started in 1998, the initial Millenium Wheel was inaugurated on December 31, 1999 and officially opened to the public in March 2000. She was then the highest tower in the world. Delisted in 2006, but never equalled in Europe. It was necessary to wait until 2011 for the monument to finally take the name of London Eyes (London Eye).
A symbol of London
What other place than the romantic scenes of the Thames, face to face Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, to erect the world’s largest back-to-back wheel (a slightly different structure from a large classic wheel)? Visiting the London Eye returns to land in the heart of London and to be able to sweep the most beautiful monuments in London.
It was expected that the London Eye only works five years before being dismantled. But the government had to go to the obvious: the wheel had imposed itself in a flash in the London landscape and it was impossible to pluck it off the Thames. Tient holds it, wouldn’t you remember the story of our famous French Iron Lady? In 2002, the wheel officially obtained the city’s title of attraction!
Technical achievements
Nearly eight hundred passengers can climb, at the same time, aboard the London Eye! Distributed in thirty two capsules (because there are thirty two arrondissements in London) that rotate gracefully in the sky and can accommodate twenty-five people each.
If you want to visit the London Eye, you will also be witness to real technical achievements.
First built flat on platforms stacked on the Thames, it was then a question of raising the wheel. An extremely tedious handling! Several cranes and days are necessary to lift it and put it on foot. At the same time, the London Eye still weighs a thousand-eight-one-sixty tons of steel! The device specially designed to maintain the capsules in a horizontal position is also exceptional. Despite the slow and progressive movement of the wheel, they remain perfectly horizontally, each of their rotations.
Since 2015, the official name of the wheel has become Coca-Cola London Eye. The soda brand has become its new sponsor, in exchange for its name attached to the wheel. However, few people call it so.
