History of the Intrepid Intrepid Sea Air & Space Museum

In 1982, the Intrepid Sea Air & Space Museum opened its doors to the general public in a former U.S. military demilitarized aircraft carrier, CV-11 USS Intrepid , measuring 250 meters long. Left at sea in 1943 to become an actor of the Second World War, the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier was quickly damaged due to repeated bombings and attacks. The United States then decided to change its use and make it a material innovation in the 1954s. Thus, the USS Intrepid became the first aircraft carrier to have the capacity and power to catapult aircraft from its bridge thanks to a steam catapult technique.

When Vietnam War This warship broke out and was modernized to meet the expectations of the American army, however, nine years later, and more precisely on 16 March 1974, the famous USS Intrepid was disarmed and retired after 31 years of good and loyal services. Thus, in August 1982, the aircraft carrier was moored at pier 86 in New York, on the banks of the Hudson River, to reinvent itself and become an extraordinary museum: the Intrepid Sea Air & Space Museum.

The Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum is located on the west side of Manhattan, Pier 86 at the crossroads between 12th Avenue and 46th Street. It is easily accessible from all points in the New York metropolitan area. To visit the Intrepid Sea Air & Space Museum you will have the choice to access it by different means:

• By metro Take them lines A, C, E, N, Q, R, S, 1, 2, 3, 7 until 42nd street, then walk to the museum or take the bus line M42 West to Hudson River on 12th Avenue. Walk north to the museum at 46th Street.
• By bus : Three bus lines pass next to the museum. Take the buses from New York City to the west. You can borrow them lines M34 (34th street), M42 (42nd street) or line M50 (49th street) to Hudson River on 12th Avenue. The Intrepid Sea Air & Space Museum is a short walk north of the bus stops. The M50 line will take you directly to the museum.

• From 1 April to 31 October : Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm, and from 10am to 6pm on Saturday, Sunday and holidays
• 1 November to 31 March : every day from 10am to 5pm (including holidays)

Note : The museum is closed on Thanksgiving Day (the fourth Thursday of November) and December 25th.

The admission rates of the museum vary depending on age:

Tickets for the guided tour can be purchased online, on site at the museum ticket office or at the information desk. Note, however, that guided tours only take place English . For holders of New York City Pass , you will not need to buy a ticket at the entrance of the museum because the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum is included in it.
