History of the Fries Museum in Bruges

Opened in May 2008, the Fries Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to the history of potato and fries! Belgium, proud of this product born on its soil, decided to devote a whole museum to it, to tell its story.

These are the families Cédric and Eddy Van Belle who are at the origin of the project, and who also hold the Belgian Chocolate Museum in Bruges, Choco-Story , and the Home Lighting Museum, Lumina Domestica.

Installed within the " Saaihalle The museum of fries is housed by the oldest building in the city (the date is mentioned on the exterior façade), which undoubtedly is also one of the most beautiful. A cultural but also heritage project, which was aimed primarily at preserving the place and its interior, while making it discover to the greatest number.

The museum of fries consists of three parts:

  • The history of potatoesstarting 10,000 years in Peru
  • The history of frite, its origin, and its importance in Belgian culture
  • One tasting room fries prepared on site, located in the medieval building cellar

You will also discover one collection of machines used for the harvest, treatment, sorting and cooking of potatoes. The museum presents more 400 antique objects related to fries and potato, such as incas (the oldest) vases representing the potato in different forms.

How do I go to the Fries Museum in Bruges?

There are several ways to get to the museum of fries in Bruges, located in the city centre at the following address: Frietmuseum Vlamingstraat 33, 8000 Brugge .

  • By car

- Take the E40 motorway direction Brussel-Ostende or A17 direction Lille-Courtrai-Bruges. Take exit 8 towards Bruges. - Then follow the panels in the direction of underground parking Biekorf – Naaldenstraat 10 or Sint-Jansplein or Vlamingstraat car parks near the museum.

  • By bus and train

If you arrive at Bruges by bus, know that the parking lot is on the small belt that makes the city round and is 500 m from Bruges train station. You'll have to count 30 minutes walk to access the museum.

City buses joining the city centre are also available from the train station every 10 minutes: you descend to the train station Grand Place (Beffroi) . The museum is 300 metres away.

  • Cycling or walking

The museum is in the heart of Bruges. Take about 15 minutes by bike from the train station and 30 minutes by foot:

- From the station, cross and take to the left the Oostmeers up to the place ‘t Zand. - Then take the Steenstraat right, a very commercial street. You arrive at the Grand Place. - Back to the Beffroi, you have to the right in front of you the Vlamingstraat.

The Fries Museum in Bruges is open daily from 10am to 5pm Annual closures: 24, 25 and 31 December, 1 January and 2nd and 3rd week of January.
