Welcome to the Chaos de Montpellier-le-Vieux! These ruins are a set of rocks carved by water, wind and time. Edged by the throats of the Dourbie in the South and by the Millau viaduct in the Northeast, this classified natural site is about 120 hectares. If you wish to visit the Cité de Pierres, you will have to go to the commune of La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite, in the heart of Grand Causses Regional Natural Park and Cevennes , classified as World Heritage Unsco .

1. On foot

This fantastic city in the grey stone of the Black Causse is a must see in Aveyron. And there is nothing better than hiking to visit the Cité de Pierres in Montpellier-le-Vieux. 6 marked paths are available to you, and they are among the more beautiful hikes of the Aveyron . There are for all levels: 1h to 3h Each member of the family will find his account.

On your way, you will encounter extraordinary panoramas accompanied by orientation tables, but also about 30 heritage panels. Then discover the City of the Stones and its natural heritage. This is the largest rocky labyrinth in Europe, but be careful not to lose yourself!

2. Small train

Get on board the small train Montpellier-le-Vieux and it’s gone for almost an hour of commented visit! Visiting the Cité de Pierres by train is ideal for seniors, families and all who want to discover the site effortlessly.

On board the small train, you only have to listen to the legends of the Cité des Pierres that you are told. Sometimes stuffed, they are many and take you to the imaginary world of this fantastic city.

Terms and rates

Small trains circulate 10:00 to 16:30 (18h in the middle of the season). We'll have to count. 4.5€ per person to borrow it.

3. The via ferrata

Come and visit the Cité de Pierres by taking the height and breathing the fresh air of the Grand Causses. Among the most beautiful via ferrata de l’Aveyron, two courses are offered to discover the site.

  • The first offers a unique route, first underground, then airborne. Accompanied by several zip lines, you get a maximum of sensations, but also panoramic views of all the Causses.
  • Finally, if the children are from the party, a second via ferrata is at their disposal. While staying at a limited distance from the ground, it is equipped with a security system avoiding manipulation errors. However, this route counts 3 via ferrata: they offer incredible panoramas and make it full of sensations!

Terms and rates

Depending on your level, you'll need to enter 2h and 2h30 to achieve one of the two courses offered. While the large via ferrata is reserved for over 12 years , the second course is accessible from 8 years old . Whatever the route, the rate is 29€ per person.

A part of Explorer’Game lasts 2h for 1 to 5 players by tablet. Whatever the number of players, renting a tablet costs 20€ . The game is available in 5 languages (French, English, Spanish, German and Dutch).
