History of Cheverny Castle
The Domaine de Cheverny belongs to the same family since the 14th century. At the heart of a troubled period, Jean Hurault, a bourgeois from Blois, buys the land. In its lineage, the following generations built a first fortress. The Huraults were at the service of several kings of France. After financial difficulties, the property is sold to Diane de Poitiers, the favourite of King Henri II.
Henri Hurault bought the whole a few decades later. He built the current castle between 1624 and 1630 by architect Jacques Bougier, dit Boyer de Blois. The main material used is the Bourré stone, a material from Loir-et-Cher. It bleached and hardened by aging, which gives its clear color to the castle. The decoration was completed around 1650. It is still considered today as one of the most beautiful of all the castles of the Loire. In 1922, the castle was the first to be opened to the public. Today, it is the Marquis Charles-Antoine de Vibraye and his wife Constance who have the responsibility to preserve and make the castle live.
